The Roman Emperor Tiberius was really into cucumbers; greenhouse techniques were developed to keep them on his table all year long. Called “Specularia” for the spectacular things that grew inside of them, greenhouses were only available to the very wealthy. The idea of subverting nature to grow more plants wasn’t limited to the west. Early greenhouses were also developed in Korea to cultivate veggies in wintertime. The traditional Korean underfloor heating system known as Ondol supplied and maintained heat and humidity inside an enclosed space. Insulated and semi-transparent windows and walls let sunlight in while keeping the cold weather out. During the Victorian era, greenhouses became more popular and accessible. Commonly used by botanists, herbalists, and gardeners, greenhouses were elaborate decorative structures that graced the grounds of the wealthy and elite. The practice of exerting control over nature by creating artificial environments to grow beautiful and exotic plants had captured the imaginations of the world. These days, greenhouses are used around the world by commercial food suppliers, nurseries, and florists. They’re also used by backyard gardeners, like you! How it Works Greenhouses create an artificial, controlled environment by trapping heat and circulating the warmed air. As sunlight enters the greenhouse through the transparent walls and roof, solar radiation is absorbed by the floor, soil, and plants. The heat is trapped by the enclosed space, causing the internal temperature of the greenhouse to rise. By heating and circulating warm air through the greenhouse, gardeners are able to grow and sustain plants where the outdoor climate is too cold or changes often. Greenhouses also serve to protect plants from wind, rain, snow, and other adverse weather conditions. By maintaining specific levels of temperature and humidity, a greenhouse can let you extend your growing season for a few weeks, or can create a complete microclimate for year-round growing. Transparent walls are great at letting light in, but they don’t insulate well. Plan ahead on how to heat your greenhouse, if needed; there are electrical, solar, and natural options. Make sure your greenhouse has a ventilation system for air flow circulation and temperature management. Greenhouses generally have two vents; an upper vent that releases warm air, and a lower vent lets cool air in. Vents can be opened and closed as needed. The ideal location for your greenhouse is on the south side of your house or property. South-facing orientation will give your greenhouse maximum sun throughout the day. Types of Greenhouses Freestanding Traditional Greenhouse This traditional style greenhouse features straight walls and a gabled roof. This is the most common greenhouse design, and are usually built with a wood or metal frame and use glass or polycarbonate panels to maximize sunlight. Pros: Higher roof for more headroom, maximize space along walls for growing or storage, good air circulation. Cons: Difficult to move once built, more expensive to build or buy and maintain. Hoop-House or Tunnel Greenhouse These greenhouses feature a curved roof and low walls, with frames made of PVC or aluminum pipes and PE plastic panels or sheeting. These are the cheapest and easiest greenhouses to build or assemble. Pros: Easy to build, inexpensive, water and snow roll off easily. Cons: Not as durable as a traditional freestanding greenhouse. Gothic Arch Greenhouse Similar in construction to the hoop house but with a peak that’s reminiscent of gothic cathedrals, these wide greenhouses are good for growing plants in rows, shelves, and pots. They are good at conserving heat, and their unique architecture make them stand out in your garden space. Pros: Simple, efficient, cheap to build or buy, water and snow roll off easily. Cons: Lower sidewalls can restrict storage and headroom. Cold Frame/ Hot Bed Greenhouse These mini-greenhouses sit flat on the ground and have a sloping lid. They can be placed over raised beds in the garden in spring to warm soil. Easily turn a cold frame into a hot bed by heating it with lights, compost, or your method of choice. Cold frames protect plants from adverse weather and hungry animals. Pros: Simple, inexpensive, and easy to use. Cons: Can overheat easily, limited space for growing. Soft or Hard Shell? A soft-sided greenhouse will be less expensive to buy, build, and maintain. They are lightweight and easier to move if needed. However, they are naturally not as durable. A rounded roof allows snow and rain to roll off easily, but lower sidewalls mean less space for storage and vertical growing. A hard shell greenhouse will be a sturdy, permanent structure. The sloped roof keeps snow from accumulating. Higher, straight sidewalls and a peaked roof give you more open space for storage and for vertical growing. These greenhouses are more expensive to build or buy and more difficult to move if needed. What is a Cold Frame? A cold frame is the simplest type of greenhouse. Cold frames are essentially bottomless boxes that sit over garden beds or boxes, heating up the soil and allowing you to start cultivating earlier in the spring, or extend your growing season into the fall. If you have limited garden space or an established garden you’d like to get more use out of, cold frames can be a good addition to your space. Easy to use and maintain, these mini-greenhouses are an excellent choice for someone who wants to ease into growing with greenhouses. Why use a Greenhouse? Do I Need One? 4 Things to Consider When Choosing a New Chicken Coop
Coops provide a comfortable lair for your hens to feel safe and relaxed. Roosts and nesting boxes are usually up off the ground because in the wild, these types of birds would look for safety in trees and bushes – these elevated areas help mimic their natural behavior. D51-091 Chickens need a coup even if you had your heart set on a sedan: Having the right chicken coup is an integral part of keeping your flock happy and healthy. Your coup will offer your hens a place to 1) relax and feel safe 2) an area to sleep at night 3) a zone not accessible to predators and 4) a different area for your birds to retreat to if they need to take a break from another member of their flock. Do your breed research: Bird keeping, of any kind, is a big responsibility. Doing your due diligence on the specific needs of your breed, before starting your plan of animal husbandry, will pay in dividends to the wellbeing of your flock and to your sanity. The type, size and number number of coops you will need depends on many factors including, but not limited to, the number of birds, their size, their breed, and how much outdoor or free range space you can provide in additional to their indoor accommodations. Enough space inside and out: Make sure to have enough roosting space and nesting space. Most of the time chickens do a good job of organizing themselves but if you are having a high turn-over or if you are growing your flock at significant rate, it is important to make sure you have enough roosting space at the right height to avoid fighting and squabbles that might hurt the chickens and give cause for concern. Larger birds tend to roost higher and tend to be higher in the pecking order. Smaller hens need perches lower to the ground. Again, you’ll want to make sure you are providing the right accommodations for your birds based on their needs. If you are getting a smaller coup that you can’t walk into, having a pull out tray for easy cleaning will help your birds stay healthy and save your back and knees. Add perches, as necessary. Our coops come with a perch, but you may need to add more perches or adjust the height of your perches depending on the sizes and numbers of your friendly flock. You will want to research and determine how big your roosts should be, and how much space you should allow for each chicken. In general they need less space in winter when they roost closer together and a little more in summer, when it is warmer. Happy, clean coups equals happy chickens! Your child is aching for something to zoom through the neighborhood (or just your driveway) on, but they a bike just isn’t going to cut it. Scooters are entertaining, practical, and just plain fun. Scooters are also really easy to use. If your child just isn’t getting the hang of riding a bike, scooters might be more their style. There isn’t a massive learning curve, which is a huge plus compared to skateboards or bicycles. To give you a hand, Aosom has put together this guide on scooters! Important Features Type of scooters Adjustable Height Your child’s age Price Different Types of Scooters Before you go out and buy whatever scooter looks okay, you should consider the different kinds there are. There are usually four different types of scooters that people look for when buying one for their children: Three-wheeled Two-wheeled Trick Electric Three-wheel scooters are perfect for kids just getting the hang of their balancing skills. The additional wheel in the back increases stability to ensure their safety. Two-wheel scooters have less stability, but that should be no problem for an advanced rider! Two-wheelers usually have a braking system attached to the back wheel. The rider presses a metal bar on top of the back wheel to stop the wheel. Even if they are less stable, two-wheel scooters have safety brakes to keep your child safe. Trick scooters are usually not recommended for young kids. They are designed to withstand the excessive force caused by skate jumps, tricks, and stunts. While they are incredibly durable and lightweight, they also lack some features you may find necessary. Many pro scooters do not fold or have an adjustable height. These features may cause weak spots that cannot withstand the excessive force caused by tricks. Electric scooters are fun just to ride around on – since they require no pushing. Your kid can go around in circles pushed by a motor. However, if you are looking for something that offers more exercise, electric scooters may not be the best option. Adjustable Height Many scooters have an adjustable handlebar height, so you can change the height as your child grows. This is also useful for those awkward times when your child is too big for one size scooter but too small for the next size up. Additionally, pick a scooter that has soft grips on the handlebars. When your child brakes or rides for a long time, they’ll appreciate the added comfort. Your Child’s Age Your child’s age has a significant impact on what scooter is appropriate for them. A heavyweight, two-wheeled metal scooter may not be appropriate for a two-year-old just getting used to standing on her own. A better scooter for them would be a plastic three-wheeler. It is more lightweight, and the extra wheel offers more balance. The metal two-wheeler would be better for older kids who have more experience riding a scooter. Price Of course, just like with any other shopping you do, you should always consider the price. Not just for the sake of your wallet, but the quality of the scooter. Scooters Costing under $50 You will find some inexpensive models that certainly won’t break the bank. However, that does not necessarily mean they consist of high-quality materials. They may be less durable and offer fewer features than the more expensive models. Scooters Costing $50-$200 Between $50 and $200 is the typical price range for quality and durable scooters. If you are seeking an average two- or three-wheeled scooter for your child to enjoy for a long time, one in this price range may be suitable. Scooters Costing $200-$500 Good quality or custom pro scooters are usually priced in this range. Scooters Costing Over $500 If you find a scooter that costs closer to a thousand dollars, you’ve probably come across a premium electric scooter. These scooters are more sturdy and durable so that they can withstand harsher terrains. Safety Gear When Riding a Scooter Scooters are not mega dangerous, but it is never any fun when you do slip and fall. Children younger than age eight should be supervised when riding. To keep them safe and protected, ensure your child: Wears properly fitting protective gear such as a helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads Wears sturdy shoes (no flip flops or sandals!) Rides only on smooth surfaces Does not go into traffic Who Can Ride a Scooter? The answer is simple: anyone can ride a scooter! Scooters are made for all ages. Since they are so easy to use, even beginners have no trouble figuring it out. Some adults may think riding a scooter is childish, but there are tons of benefits to them! They Do not Require a License Cars and motorcycles require a state license to drive. Scooters do not. If you want to ride an electric scooter, you do not need to acquire licensing. They’re Great for Commuting Scooters use either pedal power or electricity to go. Whichever scooter you purchase, it is eco-friendly and great for commuting. Scooters can be great gifts for your college-age kid! They’ll be happy getting across campus quickly and easily with a scooter. They’re Great Exercise Scooters help develop motor skills and improve balance. They’re fun to ride to school, your friend’s house, across campus, or a nearby park. -
The Essential Camping Checklist for Your Outdoor Adventures
Growing up in Oregon, I have been on many a camping trip in my time. There are all different ways to camp; backpacking into the wilderness, car camping on the coast, party camping at festivals, backyard camping, tent camping, yurt or RV glamping- you name it, I’ve probably done it. One of my favorite things about camping is how open ended it is as an activity; no matter your skill level or preferred style, anyone can have fun on a weekend camping trip. My two favorite camping trips are prime examples of this: The first was a two-night camping party extravaganza outside Portland with a huge group of friends for Warped Tour 2007. It was hot, it was loud, it was crazy. There was beer pong, campfire singalongs, and my best friend karate chopped a burning log and then fell in the creek. We slept in our cars and ate McDonald’s for every meal. The second was vastly different: a three-day backpacking trip into the Lower Rogue Wilderness Area in Southern Oregon with my then-boyfriend. We packed it in and packed it out, spending our days hiking with 40 lb packs on our backs and our nights laying out under the stars, listening to owls in the trees and the sound of the river below us. There is a whole spectrum of camping between these two extremes! Whether you’re backpacking, car or tent camping, or glamping, you need to make sure you bring all the essentials. We’ve created this essential camping checklist to help you prepare for your wilderness adventure. Make note of the closest ranger station, general store, or other outpost of civilization, especially if you are heading into the backcountry. Plan meals and pack accordingly. Be aware of fire season, fire hazards, and check ahead of time whether campfires will be allowed in your area. If not, you’ll want to bring a portable charcoal grill or propane camp stove.
