This isn’t the Street Fighter arcade tournament of our youth; eSports are now a multimillion-dollar industry. From international gaming conventions to live streams from your living room, from Super Smash Brothers to League of Legends, eSports have captured the minds and screens of the world. Back in my day, they were just called video games. My brother and I would wake up early every Saturday morning to dole out justice in the Mushroom Kingdom on our second hand NES. As the years passed, we found ourselves kickflipping with Tony Hawk on the N64, taking on the Umbrella Corp on the PS2, and barreling through DK Country on the Wii. But while we were fighting over the Player 1 controller, more serious gamers than us were beginning legitimate careers as eSports superstars. Competitive Gaming Emerges The first video game tournament was held in 1972 at Stanford University. The game was SpaceWar! and the prize was a year’s subscription to Rolling Stone magazine, the tournament’s sponsor. Throughout the 70’s and 80’s, local gaming competitions took place in arcades throughout the country, as games such as Space Invaders and Street Fighter gained popularity. Competition was fierce, although prizes were often little more than local fame and maybe a few candy bars. Larger competitions sponsored by Nintendo and Blockbuster Video (remember them?) were few and far between. Then in the 90’s, everything changed. The World Wide Web became a household word, and video games were changed forever. Suddenly, PC games were live. Players could join multiplayer games online and battle real opponents around the world from the comfort of their computer chair. The slow burn had finally ignited a wildfire of gaming competition possibility. As technology, connectivity, graphics, and games improved by leaps and bounds throughout the aughts, gaming competitions sprung up to test the mettle of dedicated gamers. As competitions became more fierce, prizes became more elaborate. In 2006, the Worldwide Webgames Championship awarded a $1 Million grand prize, thrusting eSports into the realm of legitimate competition. eSports Hits the Big Time Currently, eSports is a $906 million dollar industry. Competitions such as the Evolution Championship Series hosted in Las Vegas last year draw hundreds of competitors and thousands of spectators. Here in Portland, the annual Retro Gaming Expo has been home to the Tetris World Championship since 2010. The 2018 League of Legends World Championship, hosted in South Korea, garnered more viewers internationally than the Superbowl and the NCAA Final Four combined. Competitors vie for titles, fame and fortune, and of course, cold hard cash. Serious gamers require serious equipment. Competitive gamers spend upwards of 4 hours a day practicing their moves. How to Save Money Raising Backyard Chickens
If you are like most new chicken owners, you fell in love with the idea of getting yourself a cute flock of backyard chickens and then quickly found out that you were spending way more money than you thought. First off, realize that these feelings are completely normal and it happens to all of us! However, unlike everyone else, by the time you are done reading this article you are going to learn the secrets to saving money while tending your flock. Skip the Frills Expensive Calcium Booster Supplements This is completely unnecessary if you give your chickens a balanced diet. Some chicken owners will try to argue that purchasing things like pricey ground oyster shells is necessary to have just in case their chickens begin to lay eggs that don’t have strong shells. The truth is that the key ingredient calcium carbonate, found in ground oyster shells, is already abundant in their quality standard feed. The first step toward helping your chickens strengthen their eggs is to feed them dairy-based simple kitchen scraps, like cheese and milk. Although, be sure not to go overboard because too much diary will give your chickens diarrhea. If that still doesn’t help increase the strength of their shells, just dry out and grind up their own egg shells to feed it back to them. While this may sound odd, it is completely natural. The best part is that the egg shells are 100% free! Save Money on Feed Feed Leftovers Chickens are omnivores, which means that they eat both vegetables and meat. This is great news for us because you can give your chickens a free meal while reducing the amount of food waste in your household. Just be sure to feed your backyard chickens a healthy selection of table scraps each time. Feel free to feed your backyard chickens things like: vegetables, meat, yogurt, sunflower seeds, oatmeal, rice, cereal, cheese, milk and whey. Stay away from feeding your backyard chickens things like: junk food, uncooked beans, avocado peels and potato peels. Free Range If you have both the space and the grass, let your little chickens scratch around a bit. They will be digging up nutritious little bits to eat like: grass, weeds, worms, and insects. The most important thing to remember is that the more that you let your backyard chickens free range, the less you will need to feed them the store bought food. Saving while Staying Warm Fix the Ventilation Placing a heater in an enclosed coop during the winter can not only be dangerous, but can also very expensive. While using a flashlight, check your coop for any holes or separations where the wood meets. If you find that the light is shining on the opposite end, your coop is suffering from a poor ventilation issue. This is the equivalent of leaving your bedroom window slightly open at night on a snowy night. Brrr, no thanks! Fill the gaps with caulk until you seal up any unnecessary spaces. As a test, try and use your flashlight again to see if any light comes pouring out of the other side. If not, your job is complete. Buying Extra Nesting Boxes 1 Chicken + 1 Box ≠ Zero Problems Let’s be honest, one of the main reasons that we have chickens is so that we can enjoy some of those delicious homegrown eggs. So we do everything possible to make sure that our chickens are happy and healthy. We even make sure that each chick has their own bunk. Photo credit: Myasoinfo Unfortunately, chickens can be fickle about their accommodations. To be honest, I didn’t know what I expected. Even if I put their names on the front of their nesting boxes, it’s not like each chicken would line up orderly to their assigned bunks. It doesn’t matter if you filled each corner of your coop with nesting boxes, your chickens are going sleep on the floor and fight over particular nesting boxes for no reason. Just know that this behavior is normal, irrational chicken behavior. Entertainment and Toys With urban farming and raising backyard chickens becoming quite popular these last few years, we have seen the emergence of some pretty wacky toys meant for your chickens. Now before you buy your chicken the latest iPad take a step back and just look at your chickens. They don’t need any fancy or high tech devices. Chickens that are allowed to free range are as happy as can be. Just look at all of the fun that your chickens are having when you aren’t there: If you want to make some toys at home for your chickens to entertain themselves, try your hand at some of these classics: 1) Take a single piece of rope and hang a head of cabbage just low enough off the ground so that your chickens need to jump to get at the cabbage. 2) Once the chickens eat all of the cabbage off of the rope just leave the rope there for a few days. You’ll notice that some of the chickens will jump and use the rope as a swing. 3) You truly haven’t felt pure joy until you surprise your chickens with a pile of garden weeds, raked leaves and some feed sprinkled throughout the pile. Though I have a feeling that you will be more entertained than the chickens. Raising backyard chickens does not need to be an expensive affair. 5 Painful Warning Signs that You Need to Replace Your Ol’ Lounge Chair
Having a quality lounge chair that you can relax in when you get home is a something that every adult should consider. Whether you’re sitting down at work, at home, or in the office, the state of your seat has a direct impact on your level of health overtime. Don’t believe me? Tom Rath, author of New York Times bestselling book, Eat Move Sleep, said “Sitting is the most underrated health-threat of modern time. Researchers found that sitting more than six hours in a day will greatly increase your risk of an early death” [source]. Most highly technical health-related articles out there that cause your eyes to roll to the back of your head from boredom. Instead, we’ve designed a quick diagram to acquaint you with how your spine works. Like any piece of furniture, your chair will need to be replaced at some point. You might be sitting in your favorite chair right now! However, in an effort to be completely transparent, this is a lounge chair that used to be in our office. I snapped a quick picture of it to show you that even we need to accept the fact that our favorite lounge chair needed to be retired. Here are 5 important warning signs that you should check for before you make a decision. #1 – You Beg for Back Pain Relief after sitting for Long Hours I think that we can all agree that your chair shouldn’t leave you screaming. And, for those of you who have a ‘butts in chairs equals productivity’ mindset, Rath also mentioned that walking could increase energy levels by 150 percent. “Inactivity is dangerous,” he said, “In fact, some research shows inactivity now kills more people than smoking.” #2 – You Suffer from a Pain in your Knee If after sitting for long periods of time in a lounge chair you suffer from pain around your patella or kneecaps, it could be a form of Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PPS). PPS, sometimes called “runner’s knee” or “jumper’s knee,” is common in people who participate in sports—particularly females and young adults. But, patellofemoral pain syndrome can occur in non-athletes, as well. This kind of pain is particular annoying because it is known to come and go. It’s typically worse when your sitting still for long periods of time. The best remedy to this is to look into replacing your old chair with a chair that has better lumbar and thoracic support. This will help to improve your posture and reduce the tension that you’re putting on your knees. #3 – Are you Gaining Weight Sitting Down? When it comes to the sudden spike in your weight gain it’s not about what you’re doing, it’s more about what you’re NOT doing. Did you know that within 90 seconds of standing up, the muscular and cellular systems that process blood sugar, triglycerides, and cholesterol are all activated? All of these healthy benefits are activated simply by carrying your own body weight. This daily tension on your longus colli muscle, which is responsible for stabilizing the neck and connecting to the vertebrae, can cause what’s known as tension headaches. This sudden jerking of the head of impact is what is called “Whiplash” and can cause an increase in the amount of headaches you get while sitting down for long periods of time.[/alert] -
What Type of Scooter is Best for My Child?
Introduction A lot of people like to say that kids these days don’t want to do anything but sit in front of screens all day. We don’t buy that! Kids today may not be satisfied with skipping rocks across the river like their parents used to but give them a fun toy to play with and they will spend hours outdoors. We believe that kids are more than happy to spend time away from TVs, smartphones, and video games if they only have something fun and exciting to do. Scooters are a perfect opportunity for your child to get outside for a little physical activity. They’re more fun than riding a bike and overall, they’re safer than riding a skateboard. Scooters come in a variety of sizes and styles, and there are options that work perfectly for children of virtually any age. Riding a scooter will help to develop the coordination and balance of younger children, and as they grow older, they can learn to do some tricks and more advanced riding techniques. How do you choose the right scooter though? Here are some things to look for when deciding. Key Scooter Features The primary considerations when choosing a scooter are the size, maximum weight capacity, and wheel size. Weight Capacity When shopping for a scooter, you should always be able to find a weight capacity listed in the specifications, sometimes called a max load. This capacity is the largest weight that the scooter is rated to comfortably support without damage and increased risk of injury. Always check this limit before making a buying decision to ensure that your kid’s weight is below this limit. The last thing you want is for your son or daughter to be injured! Height The height of the handlebars is another key factor to consider. Most scooters will have handlebars with adjustable height, but the adjustment is often only a few inches. The heights can span a wide range from one scooter to another. One option may extend 34”-37”, while another only goes to 31.5”-33.5.” Wheel Size There is some variety when it comes to wheel size, and what you choose is all about the skill level of your child. Wheels come in a variety of diameters and widths. Some scooters have 12” diameter tires, while others have 16” diameter tires, plus a plethora of other sizes. Some scooters have the same size on front and back, while others have a front tire that is larger than the rear tire. The main rule with tire wheel size is that the smaller the wheel is, the lower the deck sits to the ground which increases stability. Larger tires also tend to allow for higher speed. Wheel Material/Type Scooter wheels typically come in two different types. There are polyurethane wheels, which are solid and somewhat hard rubber wheels. These are strong and are long-lasting. There are also scooters with tires that are more similar to a bicycle’s tires; made from a softer slip-resistant rubber and inflated. These tires offer superior grip on the road’s surface meaning decreased wipe-out odds. The rubber inflatable wheels tend to be larger in diameter than the polyurethane wheels. How to Choose the Best Options So now that we know the types of features to look for, how do we know which option is best for your child? To determine the best option, we need to consider the age, height, weight, and skill level of your child. For Younger Kids If your child is very young, say between the ages of 3-5, then they would benefit most from something that is going to be highly stable for them while their balance and coordination isn’t quite up to its potential yet. This means choosing a scooter with smaller wheels, which will cause the scooter to sit lower and be more stable. The smallest wheels tend to be polyurethane, and you should look for a wheel somewhere in the 7-8” diameter range. At this age the weight capacity isn’t particularly important, as even scooters with the lowest weight limits can typically handle at least 150 pounds. The more important factor here is the height of the handlebars. The ideal height for a scooter’s handlebars is around hip level. The easiest solution to figure this one out is to just use a handy-dandy tape measure, and measure from the floor to the top of your kid’s hip bones. This measurement is the handlebar height you should be looking at. For Older Kids As your child gets older, the idea scooter is a bit different. Once they’re around 9 years old and into their early teens they are likely become more skilled. Their balance and coordination should be far better than it was just a few years ago. With these considerations in mind, you will want to look for a scooter with wheels that are a bit larger, in the 12”-16” range. This will bring the deck up off the ground which will allow for better ground clearance; this is important because this is around the age when they will start to try out some tricks. Speaking of the daredevil nature that takes over as they get older, the more pliable rubber inflatable wheels are a good option here due to the superior grip. This will help prevent road rash when they’re trying to pull off a stunt. Selection Tips Wrapping up, here are some tips in choosing the best scooter for your child. Measure your kid’s height up to their hip bones and use this to determine the handlebar height to go with. Check the weight capacity on the scooter’s you are looking at to be sure your chile isn’t over the limit. Consider your child’s level of coordination and experience to determine how large the wheels should be. Smaller wheels mean more stability. Think about whether your child is the type to attempt stunts. If so, you’ll want large, soft rubber inflatable wheels to help make this safer.
