Tips on How to Care for Chickens in Winter
With each passing week as we shift from the fall into the dreaded winter, those new to keeping birds out back can be a little frantic as to how they can keep them safe through the dropping temperatures. Urban and suburban farming has become incredibly popular, especially keeping chickens for the most organic and “free range” eggs you can get. Here are a few key ways to care for your chickens in winter from now until the warmer months.The primary thing that any serious chicken “wrangler” is going to need is to have a safe place to keep your chickens. Moderately priced chicken coops are available for flocks of almost every size. Many of these have deluxe inside spaces that give them a gracious amount of room. The best combination you can have is to have a chicken coop that will have:1. a sufficient open fenced space for when the weather permits more outside activity.2. a substantial indoor option that they can bunker into at night.Adding a proper chicken coop that will accommodate to all of the seasons will make raising your chickens in winter a lot easier. Not to mention our chicken coops make for an attractive conversation piece that will help to avoid that “cluttered look” in your yard.What if I Have Other Animals?This is a great question, and often a BIG question that people forget to ask when they first consider adding a cute little chick into their family. Typically, if you are considering chickens you may already have other animals. While socialization is important, giving your chickens their own space and protection from other outdoor predators is vital. To reduce the risk of any unforeseen issues, consider a larger chicken coop model. The finished sealed wood grain will compliment your home’s décor, as well as minimize heat loss in the winter.Will My Chickens Freeze if They’re Outside?Not if you prepare appropriately and insulate the inside of your chicken coop. The second step here is going to be to create a space of artificial warmth.[alert type=”warning” close=”false”]Disclaimer: This method works best when placed in the outside area of the pen so as to not create a fire hazard with the internal bedding that you previously laid down.[/alert]A stand-up electric heater with a weather safe chord is going to be important for the fenced area, especially when you are dealing with freezing weather. This will allow a general “permatemperature” to occur and keep things safe so that your chickens regular body temperature does not have a chance to drop to unsafe levels.You need to then head inside the chicken coop and make sure that the trays, which are below the floor fencing, have extra stuffing and are emptied about halfway. This ends up acting as a bit of insulation for the chicken coop. Additionally, you could use pillow stuffing or even shredded newspaper to help insulate your chicken coop.Don’t Underestimate the Power of JellyIf streams of biting cold are going through your coop then you are going to want to prevent against frostbite. To do this, you will want to put petroleum jelly on the waddles, feet, and feathers of your chickens in winter. The best way to do this on the feathers is to cake it on a comb and comb it through the feathers, and then to hand rub them on the non-feathered areas. This does not have to be incredibly thick, but it needs to have a noticeable surface of protection.Switch from Feed to Corn in the WinterSwitch your feedings to corn at night. Corn tends to be a healthier and heartier meal for chickens that will help them gain more weight. Not only that, but corn takes longer to digest. How to House Train a Puppy in Less than 2 Weeks
Because most new dog owners will want to know how to house train a puppy, we’ve created a guide that will set you on your way to household bliss. I want to take a moment to highlight the power of using a crate to help potty train your pup. Since your dog’s natural instinct is not to pee or poop where they sleep, purchasing the proper crate will make your life A LOT easier. Once you’re all setup and prepared for the arrival of your new pet, follow these steps and you’ll have a house broken puppy in no time. [one_half] [/one_half][one_half] Step 1: Make sure that your pet is at least 12 to 16 weeks old. Any earlier and they simply won’t have the ability to control his or her bladder. Otherwise, be prepared to set an alarm for the middle of the night to encourage your pup not to use the bathroom in their crate. Step 2: Always feed your pet at the same time each day. Sticking to a schedule will make it easier to predict when bathroom time will be needed. I suggest a firm routine of: outside, pee, poop, praise and then supervised free time. Step 3: Similarly, you should take your pet out to the same spot every time to ensure that the scent will remind them what to do and where. Step 4: Go outside with your pet and stay with them while they do their business to reassure them that what they’re doing is correct. Step 5: Reward your pet and offer them extra attention and treats after they go. This will provide positive reinforcement and association with good behavior. The Essential Camping Checklist for Your Outdoor Adventures
Growing up in Oregon, I have been on many a camping trip in my time. There are all different ways to camp; backpacking into the wilderness, car camping on the coast, party camping at festivals, backyard camping, tent camping, yurt or RV glamping- you name it, I’ve probably done it. One of my favorite things about camping is how open ended it is as an activity; no matter your skill level or preferred style, anyone can have fun on a weekend camping trip. My two favorite camping trips are prime examples of this: The first was a two-night camping party extravaganza outside Portland with a huge group of friends for Warped Tour 2007. It was hot, it was loud, it was crazy. There was beer pong, campfire singalongs, and my best friend karate chopped a burning log and then fell in the creek. We slept in our cars and ate McDonald’s for every meal. The second was vastly different: a three-day backpacking trip into the Lower Rogue Wilderness Area in Southern Oregon with my then-boyfriend. We packed it in and packed it out, spending our days hiking with 40 lb packs on our backs and our nights laying out under the stars, listening to owls in the trees and the sound of the river below us. There is a whole spectrum of camping between these two extremes! Whether you’re backpacking, car or tent camping, or glamping, you need to make sure you bring all the essentials. We’ve created this essential camping checklist to help you prepare for your wilderness adventure. While you may not need everything on this list, you might just find something you never thought to bring! Check to see if you need reservations ahead of time, or if a park fee is required. Make sure to bring cash just in case. Make note of the closest ranger station, general store, or other outpost of civilization, especially if you are heading into the backcountry. Plan meals and pack accordingly. Bring a spatula and skillet if you’re making pancakes for breakfast. Pre-season meat at home or bring it in a marinade bag. Don’t forget salt and pepper! Be aware of fire season, fire hazards, and check ahead of time whether campfires will be allowed in your area. If not, you’ll want to bring a portable charcoal grill or propane camp stove. Don’t forget the coffee! You probably won’t be bringing your Keurig, so opt for iced coffees or instant coffee. Bring a pot to boil water in.
