Scooters Buying Guide
Your child is aching for something to zoom through the neighborhood (or just your driveway) on, but they a bike just isn’t going to cut it. Scooters are entertaining, practical, and just plain fun. Scooters are also really easy to use. If your child just isn’t getting the hang of riding a bike, scooters might be more their style. There isn’t a massive learning curve, which is a huge plus compared to skateboards or bicycles. To give you a hand, Aosom has put together this guide on scooters! Important Features Type of scooters Adjustable Height Your child’s age Price Different Types of Scooters Before you go out and buy whatever scooter looks okay, you should consider the different kinds there are. There are usually four different types of scooters that people look for when buying one for their children: Three-wheeled Two-wheeled Trick Electric Three-wheel scooters are perfect for kids just getting the hang of their balancing skills. The additional wheel in the back increases stability to ensure their safety. Two-wheel scooters have less stability, but that should be no problem for an advanced rider! Two-wheelers usually have a braking system attached to the back wheel. The rider presses a metal bar on top of the back wheel to stop the wheel. Even if they are less stable, two-wheel scooters have safety brakes to keep your child safe. Trick scooters are usually not recommended for young kids. They are designed to withstand the excessive force caused by skate jumps, tricks, and stunts. While they are incredibly durable and lightweight, they also lack some features you may find necessary. Many pro scooters do not fold or have an adjustable height. These features may cause weak spots that cannot withstand the excessive force caused by tricks. Electric scooters are fun just to ride around on – since they require no pushing. Your kid can go around in circles pushed by a motor. However, if you are looking for something that offers more exercise, electric scooters may not be the best option. Adjustable Height Many scooters have an adjustable handlebar height, so you can change the height as your child grows. This is also useful for those awkward times when your child is too big for one size scooter but too small for the next size up. Additionally, pick a scooter that has soft grips on the handlebars. When your child brakes or rides for a long time, they’ll appreciate the added comfort. Your Child’s Age Your child’s age has a significant impact on what scooter is appropriate for them. A heavyweight, two-wheeled metal scooter may not be appropriate for a two-year-old just getting used to standing on her own. A better scooter for them would be a plastic three-wheeler. It is more lightweight, and the extra wheel offers more balance. The metal two-wheeler would be better for older kids who have more experience riding a scooter. Price Of course, just like with any other shopping you do, you should always consider the price. Not just for the sake of your wallet, but the quality of the scooter. Scooters Costing under $50 You will find some inexpensive models that certainly won’t break the bank. However, that does not necessarily mean they consist of high-quality materials. They may be less durable and offer fewer features than the more expensive models. Scooters Costing $50-$200 Between $50 and $200 is the typical price range for quality and durable scooters. If you are seeking an average two- or three-wheeled scooter for your child to enjoy for a long time, one in this price range may be suitable. Scooters Costing $200-$500 Good quality or custom pro scooters are usually priced in this range. Scooters Costing Over $500 If you find a scooter that costs closer to a thousand dollars, you’ve probably come across a premium electric scooter. These scooters are more sturdy and durable so that they can withstand harsher terrains. Safety Gear When Riding a Scooter Scooters are not mega dangerous, but it is never any fun when you do slip and fall. Children younger than age eight should be supervised when riding. To keep them safe and protected, ensure your child: Wears properly fitting protective gear such as a helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads Wears sturdy shoes (no flip flops or sandals!) Rides only on smooth surfaces Does not go into traffic Who Can Ride a Scooter? The answer is simple: anyone can ride a scooter! Scooters are made for all ages. Since they are so easy to use, even beginners have no trouble figuring it out. Some adults may think riding a scooter is childish, but there are tons of benefits to them! They Do not Require a License Cars and motorcycles require a state license to drive. Scooters do not. If you want to ride an electric scooter, you do not need to acquire licensing. They’re Great for Commuting Scooters use either pedal power or electricity to go. Whichever scooter you purchase, it is eco-friendly and great for commuting. Celebrating our National Parks this 4th of July Weekend
Summer is in full swing! Next Thursday is America’s Birthday, commonly known as Independence Day. The 4th of July is one of the biggest camping weekends of the year. Whether you’re hitting up the local campground for a family reunion, or trekking out into one of America’s National Parks for a few days away from civilization, we’ve got the gear you need to make it Aosom! This 4th of July, we want to take a moment to highlight some of the Americans who made our preserved wild places possible: Carleton Watkins, John Muir, and Theodore Roosevelt. Three men who, at the turn of the 20th century, set the stage for the National Parks and Forests that we are able to appreciate and enjoy today. Carleton Watkins Carleton Watkins was a 19th century landscape photographer who captured America’s imagination with his photographs of the American West. He used a revolutionary stereoscope camera to create unprecedented images of wild landscapes, focusing specifically on California’s Yosemite Valley. Watkins’ photographs brought the beauty of the West to the world. “In part because of Watkins’ Yosemite pictures, in 1864 Congress passed and President Lincoln signed legislation preserving Yosemite Valley. The law was an important first step in the creation of the National Park Service in 1916. In 1865, Mount Watkins in Yosemite was named after Carleton Watkins.”(1). Watkins’ early forays into environmental conservatism laid the foundation for environmentalism in American politics. John Muir “And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul.” John Muir was a naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, and lifelong advocate for the preservation of wild places in the American West. Known as the “Patron Saint of the American Wilderness,” Muir co-founded the conservation organization The Sierra Club in 1892. The Sierra Club worked to establish the National Forests and put protected lands under federal jurisdiction. A Scottish immigrant, Muir devoted his life to the preservation of western forests. Muir was a contemporary of Watkins, and the two spent time together in Yosemite. Muir studied Watkin’s iconic photographs of Yosemite Valley and its features, including El Capitan, while Watkins photographed Muir amongst the trees and valleys he fought to preserve. Theodore Roosevelt America’s 25th president, Teddy Roosevelt was a lifelong naturalist and environmental conservationist. In 1903, President Roosevelt met with John Muir in Yosemite. The two embarked on a backcountry camping trip through the Yosemite Valley, which had a profound impact upon both. About the experience, Roosevelt was quoted, saying “Lying out at night under those giant Sequoias was like lying in a temple built by no hand of man, a temple grander than any human architect could by any possibility build.”(2). Muir helped convince Roosevelt of the need for Federal regulation of designated wild places, and the importance of preservation over resource conservation. During his presidency from 1901-1909, Roosevelt used his Executive Order powers to establish National Parks, Forests, and Monuments to preserve natural resources, and provide protections for both land and wildlife. Yosemite Valley was the focal point for early conservation efforts. It’s rich valleys, sheer rock mountain faces, clear rivers, and towering sequoias inspired early naturalists and conservationists to action. Healthy at Any Age: How to Avoid Childhood Obesity
Childhood obesity has become such an epidemic that the topic has even caught the attention of the First Lady. From nutrition policies in schools to after school programs based on physical education, childhood obesity has become one of the largest health crisis’ in the country. As early onset diabetes and other health problems are direct results of childhood obesity. Many of these issues can be traced directly to long-term health risks that accompany a person throughout their life. However, there is hope! With the proper mindset, resources and tools you can begin to develop fun healthy habits to help your young ones easily shed those extra pounds. Setting Good Habits The first line of defense against childhood obesity begins in the home where the virtues of both exercise and eating well are instilled at an early age. Here are a few ways to avoid childhood obesity in your family by creating patterns that they can follow for an entire lifetime of healthy living. What is of primary importance is building strong habits over time that will begin to feel like natural instinct. Healthy habits can be developed really early on where what a child does for fun often develops out of the activities that are encouraged between the parent and the child. This means that if a Dad focuses on eating potato chips and watching television every Saturday, then this is exactly the behavior the child will find natural as they get older. If, on the other hand, you make regular gym exercise the focus of shared household activities, then you will find that your child will naturally feel the need to remain healthy. How to Kickstart your Child’s Weightloss A new trend to answer this question is to provide small kids with their own exercise equipment that they can use to model what their parents and older mentors do. Exercise bikes, treadmills, rowing machines, and a variety of other equipment types have models that are perfect for their age range, even down to just three or four years old. These types of at home fitness equipment are often primarily for a child to learn the behavior. Practicing on something like the child-sized treadmill can be an easy way to keep them moving while they lounge indoors. The toddler-sized exercise bikes are great when set next to your exercise bike, allowing the children and parents to work out together. This sets the trend and will increase the chances for them to continue this behavior as they get older. More than just engaging in a regular workout regimen, integrating physical activities for recreation is going to be important at an early age. Bring home a basketball hoop that they can use in the driveway to encourage physical fun on a regular basis, and make sure to volunteer to play these games with your child from time-to-time. This will put a physical activity on the menu instead of letting the child resort strictly to things like video games. If you start the connection to fun forms of physical exertion then your kids will want to continue these activities into their teenage years. It will also be one of the primary ways that they avoid those extra pounds and set themselves up for a stable and efficient cardiovascular system. You could also try getting them hooked on unique activities, such as impressing people by riding a unicycle. Getting a trampoline is a classic, and can be a great way to bring people together while keeping the whole family fit. The same can be true of family hiking and camping trips. It may also be good to begin introducing significant lifestyle changes that take a look at health and wellness holistically through a mind and body connection. Yoga and Pilates are a great way to focus on whole body health, and can be great for things like reducing the chance of injuries and chronic neck and back pain. Try starting a slow and steady yoga regimen with your kids by getting them a beginner’s kit, and then eventually working up to ball and mat-based exercises. Core strength, flexibility, and general muscle tone are all going to help to reduce taking on extra weight. If you are looking to extend the physical activity even further, then the best way to do this is to enroll them in structured activities or classes. Gymnastics and martial arts are both incredibly popular right now, and what is nice is you can bring their practice at home by turning an empty space in the home into your own little studio. This is incredibly easy when using a high-quality gymnastic mat so that they can practice routines, or generally have a space to be physical in that allows for some cushion and support. Team sports are also an obvious solution but try really observing where your child’s interest are so that you can try to find something that they will be excited about and voluntarily continue throughout their youth and even into their adult years as a point of fitness. Poor dietary options are one of the primary reasons that younger kids are experiencing a rise in average BMI and increased rates of illness. This often comes from the consumption of fast-food in the busy household lifestyle, as well as the lack of access to quality food for many low-income families. Many people are now looking for dietary goals and restrictions that can reflect a more consistent healthy diet to avoid obesity. Should I Consider a Vegetarian or Vegan Lifestyle? The whole foods, plant-based diet has become popular and is a great way of avoiding processed foods, having nutrition dense meals, and creating eating patterns for the family. Oftentimes parents go adopt a vegetarian diet, thinking that this will automatically be healthier. While it is healthy, in many ways, you should note that you often have to up the heavy dairy intake and this alone can continue weight gain and further increase a person’s cholesterol. Vegan diets are again easier to reduce caloric intake, but require much more work to create tasty dishes because you are no longer relying on the strong flavors of dairy and animal fat. What is often best is to strike a balance; focusing on green vegetables and fruits, lowering the amount of meat your family consumes, and switching to lean meat and fish when possible. A great way to get kids excited about healthy meals is to actually invite them into the kitchen to cook with you, which also develops a useful skill for them and starts the habit of cooking meals in the home. Summary Fighting childhood obesity can be done by consistently eating with the family and developing great eating habits. That way you can control the type and the quality of the food that you consume. It will also help to instill more nutritious eating by slowing down the pace at which we eat. You should avoid both eating too fast and eating while multitasking.
