The Patio: It’s a place of relaxation, a gathering place for friends and family, an event space for parties, a quiet nap nook. Your patio is possibly the most versatile space in your home. Is your patio ready for an update? Keep reading to find out more about the latest patio trends to freshen up your outdoor space! With summer upon us, we’re all feeling that urge to get outside more. There’s nothing quite like kicking back in your own private outdoor oasis with a cold beer or frosty margarita. My favorite part of summer is lounging on my patio in my vintage wicker armchairs, adult beverage in hand, dogs at my feet. You can catch me out there all summer reading books, annoying the neighbors with my unfortunate musical tastes, or yukking it up with friends. To spice up my outdoor space this year, I’m checking out these patio trends for outdoor decor inspiration. Our Favorite Patio Trends to Try This Year Lighting Outdoor lighting is all the rage this year. Great lighting makes your patio space super useable, safe, and inviting. This is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to update your patio. Since I have a small space, I’m looking at putting up some strings of fairy lights. If you have a larger area, opt for longer strings of naked bulbs, or put up poles to create a lighted outpost in your backyard. Look for LED lights that can be controlled by your phone for maximum convenience. Dual Purpose Furniture Functionality in design is experiencing a revival, which is good news for those of us with small spaces. Storage benches and poufs or ottomans that can pull double duty as tables all provide functional versatility. These pieces help you make the most out of a smaller patio space, and their dual functionality makes them more wallet-friendly, too. Fire Pits Who can resist that primal draw to a fire? Fire pits make an ideal focal point to any patio. Both decorative and functional, fire pits give your guests a place to gather. They also let you extend your patio season into the cooler fall months, as you can cozy up around the fire when the nights start to get chilly. Outdoor Kitchens and Bars This trend has been steadily growing in popularity the last few years. Don’t waste precious daylight trekking back and forth to the kitchen this summer. Mix and Match Materials Matching is so last year. Don’t be afraid to mix metal and wood for an industrial look, or wicker with ceramics for a softer style. Because how are you supposed to talk to your plants if they don’t have names? Accent Pieces and Pops of Color Tasteful, muted neutrals will never go out of style. Adding a pop of color with funky throw pillows or bright cushions will liven up your patio and keep your look up to date. Fun accent pieces like a dramatic plant stand or elaborate end tables can really make your patio pop (without breaking the bank). For a more modern, clean, and fancier than usual approach, a white or light pink tree can fit in better than Santa down the chimney. It can be an eye-catcher! A light blue-ish tree can give the same feel as a white or pink tree, but it can change its tone depending on your theme. Blue can be associated with cold and mixed with a warm atmosphere, which can add balance to your decoration theme. Then Choose the Right Look and Style Artificial trees can come in many different styles, just like many real trees. Artificial trees can have a randomized look, with branches that are not uniform and sprawled out, giving it a natural look. This ties in with having a more rustic theme within your space. Or maybe it can help to blend the artificial nature of the tree within the area you have it set up. They also can look very manufactured, very clean, and trimmed. He helped us learn to crawl, walk, then run, and he was always there to help pick us up when we tripped or faltered. Dads don’t always get the recognition they deserve and sometimes it’s hard to show him how much we really do care. This Father’s Day I want to help you spend some quality time with Dad! Here are some of my favorite activities to do with my Dad that are easy, perfect for any age, and won’t break the bank. START A DIY PROJECT Build something and Create something special! Even if your dad isn’t a handyman or a tinkerer there are plenty of DIY projects that can bring you and your dad together. My dad is always building something and some of my favorite memories are when he invited me to join him. It didn’t matter what we were working on, what really stuck with me is the time we spent together. Here are a few fun projects that you can do with your dad: TAKE A HIKE Go on a day hike or an overnighter! Find a hike near you Being outside is always a good decision and sharing an outdoor adventure with Dad can be very rewarding. If you’re not an avid outdoorsman try taking a day hike or look up landmarks in your area and take a day trip to discover new places you may have overlooked before. Look up parks and hiking in a map search to find close to home adventures. If you are the rugged type, taking an overnight or weekend hike can help bring you and Dad closer than ever. What better time, than the time spent on a trail, to tell your Dad how much he means to you and how happy you are to have him in your life. Find out your Dad’s favorite trails or destinations and surprise him! COOK SOMETHING TOGETHER Find your Dad’s favorite food and cook it with him The archaic days of the kitchen being a woman’s domain are over! Tabletop games are my personal family favorite including board games like Catan, Ticket to Ride, and Monopoly, and card games like Cribbage and Gin Rummy. Nothing brings a family together like the fun and often competitive nature of gaming. For adults, try getting to know your dad a little better by introducing him to a rousing game of Cards Against Humanity. ? Or if you’re more of a dirt and pigskin type family, invite your dad out for a game of catch, a round of golf, or basketball. Get sweaty and invigorated and only let dad win a few times (competition is a healthy part of any relationship) VISIT A MUSEUM Learn your Dad’s interests and find a museum for it! My Dad’s a boat guy. He’s always owned a boat, had books on boats, built model boats, and could tell you every little detail about every type of boat. So naturally, one of my favorite places to visit with my dad is the maritime museum in our city. I’ve learned so much from him so its fun to watch him learn a thing or two when we visit the museum. He is like a kid again and its inspiring to watch. So find out what your Dad likes; Boats, cars, trains, science, art, history…. Chances are, there’s an accompanying museum close by. So, whatever you do this weekend and wherever you go, just remember to acknowledge and recognize your dad, your grandfather, and any other father figures in your life!
