Choosing the right dog house for your home means understanding what your dog needs. Some pet parents jump into looking for the best dog house without considering important dog house buying tips and without considering what they need out of a dog house. These are the most versatile as they come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. They are also easily customizable with your dog’s belongings. A cabin is a great option whether you want it inside your house or outside. It provides protection from harsh weather, a calm place to nap, and a space to avoid people or other pets. These types of dog houses can be enclosed like crates, but are most commonly open and are only used for the dog’s comfort. Raised Platform Dog House A raised platform dog house is the least restrictive style of dog house on our list. They are strictly meant for comfort and don’t provide much shelter as with cabin dog houses. A raised platform dog house is most similar to a dog bed, but with a roof, which might be perfect for your dog’s needs. Dog House Materials Once you determine the right style of dog house, next on our list of dog house buying tips is to consider the material used. The material affects the comfort, durability, and protection offered. The most common types to choose from include wood, plastic, and metal. Wood The most popular material for a dog house is wood, especially for a dog cabin. Wood makes a dog house versatile in that you can adjust the shape, color, and weather resistance with ease. You can add windows if you want to add more ventilation as well. Wood is also a great insulator. So, if you live in a cooler climate or an area with cold winters, a wood dog house can help keep your dog warm. We recommend waterproofing it to increase longevity. Plastic If your idea of the best dog house is one that will last a long time, plastic is a terrific option. Its longevity is similar to that of wood, especially if you live in a mild climate. To find a good fit, you’ll need to measure your dog and compare those measurements to those of the dog house. How to Measure Your Dog Your dog’s height matters the most when it comes to measuring them for a dog house. If a dog house is tall enough, it is almost always going to be wide enough. In order to measure your dog, make sure they are standing with all four feet flat on the floor. Take the end of the tape measure and place it on the ground directly below your dog’s chin. With your dog’s head looking forward, measure to the highest point of their head. Repeat the process, but measure from one of your dog’s paws to the top of their shoulder. Dog House Measurements The dimensions of a dog house are listed in the format length x width x height; you mainly need to worry about the height. Some manufacturers will have only the height listed in the product name, but the full dimensions should be available in the product description. You’ll also want to note the height of the door or entrance. Now, compare the height of your dog’s shoulder to the height of the cabin entrance. The door frame should be about 25% shorter than the height of your dog’s shoulder. This helps to control temperature changes within the cabin. Next, compare the height of the cabin itself to your dog’s head height (make sure the measurement doesn’t include any feet or platforms). The cabin should sit about 25% higher than your dog’s head. This ensures your dog has enough room to stand up comfortably and not be hunched over. However, there is a hard-won balance that every passionate gardener tries to achieve when adding their first few chickens to their household. Failing to research the proper chicken garden designs, beforehand, will cause you a headache worth squawking about. 3 Reasons Why You Should Care About Chicken Garden Designs 1) Chickens dig… a lot! This is can be torture when you find out that your cute little chickens have decided to rip up all the grass in your garden that you’ve spent months tending. Fun fact: Chickens will scratch! That’s how they dig for bugs as they roam your backyard. Pre-planning your chicken friendly garden design will help you keep the damage to a minimum. 2) Chickens need cleanup. These cute cluckers can kick up dust, scratch in mulch, and get dirty. As a result, you will need to spend time cleaning your chickens and their coops. Listen, you wouldn’t place a dog house next to a mud puddle, right? The same logic applies here. Trust me, you’re going to want to plan out your chickens roaming areas. 3) Chicken fertilizer comes in the form of poop. I can’t stress this point enough; chickens poop a lot. It’s true that chicken poop makes for a wonderful fertilizer that both your plants and grass will love. However, I promise that you won’t be loving it when you find that same chicken poop on your favorite outdoor chair. Natural fertilizer is great. Having designated poop boundaries are better! How to Design the Best Chicken Garden Layer-by-Layer: Level 1: The Ground Level Gravel: If you’re in a hotter climate, you may not have the luxury of having grass in your yard. However, it’s not all bad. Gravel serves as a good supply of grit to help your chickens digest any fibrous materials from your free-ranging chickens. Grass: On the other hand, if you do have grass feel free to put your chickens to work. Using a chicken wire fence, you can create a temporary graze area. Chickens act as natural lawn mowers as they graze. Also, you’re gaining the added benefit of building richer soil from the chicken fertilizer. It’s important to note that you’ll want to move your chickens when you see that the grass has become shorter than 2 inches in length. Level 2: The Herb & Veggie Layer Chickens will love chowing down on some tasty greens in your garden. The greens on this level are edible and easy to reach. Plus, chickens will eat many of the bugs that attack your herbs and veggies that you don’t want to kill with pesticides. The trick is to make sure you don’t plant all of your herbs and veggies in one place. Otherwise, you will encourage overgrazing. Give your herbs and veggies some space by planting them throughout your chicken garden. [alert type=”info” close=”false”]Types of greens that can be planted at this level are: lettuce, spinach, kale, mustard, lavender, Swiss chard, and parsley.[/alert] Level 3: Bushes & Shrubs Layer Having a well-placed shrub or bush in your backyard will serve two important purposes for your chickens. Firstly, it will provide natural shade and protection to your chickens when they are away from their chicken coop. Secondly, your bushes and shrubs can provide food for your chickens in the form of berries, fruit, and seeds. [alert type=”info” close=”false”]Types of bushes and shrubs to consider are: blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, pomegranates, and gooseberries.[/alert] Level 4: The Top Layer Your top layer will typically consist of trees that bear fruit. These trees will serve as additional shade and sources of food for your chickens. Unlike your Bushes and Shrubs layer your Top Layer trees will require more sunlight. As a result, you should plant these fruit bearing trees just outside the edge of your new chicken-friendly garden. Using proper technique while doing dips can quickly get rid of flabby arms and give your arms the right tone and definition that you’re going for. That’s where investing in your own personal dip station comes in handy. If you don’t have the necessary strength as you begin to create an exercise routine, you put yourself at risk for a lot of different injuries. Not to mention that doing dips naturally release a ton of hormones necessary for fat loss and muscle building. Moving from couch dips to a dip station opens up the possibility to include more alterations in your workout routine for smarter exercising through muscle confusion. Try and aim to complete your isometric sets at least 6 hours away from your regular workout routine. 3) Weighted Dips All the dip progressions can be combined with a weight so that you experience incredible muscle growth as well as perfect your metabolic workouts. Remember, if you are going for endurance then go ahead and skip the weighted dip. However, if you’re going for strength and muscle then you are definitely going to want to do some weighted dips. The easiest and safest way to complete a weighted dip is to get a dip belt and plates hanging on a chain. Here are some dip belts that I recommend: The Harbinger The Brute 4) Tricep Dips Tricep dips are probably the most versatile, as you can do them without a dip machine. To complete this exercise you’ll need to position your hands shoulder-width apart on a secure bench or chair. Then, slide your butt off the front of the bench with your legs fully extended. Next, slowly bend your elbow down to your lower body until your elbows are about at a 90-degree angle. The key is to make sure that you keep your back as close to the bench as possible as you repeat this exercise. 5) Chest Dips Certain dip stations have been specially designed so that they have angled grips for enhancing your tricep muscles and your chest muscles. The trick to this exercise is understanding that the power is in the posture. Limit any jerky movements and remain smooth and steady in order to stay in control of the exercise. Recap Remember, it’s completely normal for fat to get stored in arms over time. The Essential Camping Checklist for Your Outdoor Adventures
Growing up in Oregon, I have been on many a camping trip in my time. There are all different ways to camp; backpacking into the wilderness, car camping on the coast, party camping at festivals, backyard camping, tent camping, yurt or RV glamping- you name it, I’ve probably done it. One of my favorite things about camping is how open ended it is as an activity; no matter your skill level or preferred style, anyone can have fun on a weekend camping trip. My two favorite camping trips are prime examples of this: The first was a two-night camping party extravaganza outside Portland with a huge group of friends for Warped Tour 2007. It was hot, it was loud, it was crazy. There was beer pong, campfire singalongs, and my best friend karate chopped a burning log and then fell in the creek. We slept in our cars and ate McDonald’s for every meal. The second was vastly different: a three-day backpacking trip into the Lower Rogue Wilderness Area in Southern Oregon with my then-boyfriend. We packed it in and packed it out, spending our days hiking with 40 lb packs on our backs and our nights laying out under the stars, listening to owls in the trees and the sound of the river below us. There is a whole spectrum of camping between these two extremes! Whether you’re backpacking, car or tent camping, or glamping, you need to make sure you bring all the essentials.
