Groundhog Day: Some Historical Context + Marmot Minutiae
Groundhog Day will soon be here! A moment, a choice approaches near. Do we get six weeks of drear, or rays of sunshine shining clear? Apologies for the verse – please don’t be terse… Groundhog Day is one of our more eccentric traditions. Each year, the news cycle briefly touches on the ritual, and these days it’s viewed more as a passing amusement than a predictor of fate. Some may already know the origin and history of the Groundhog Day tradition. However, as we prepare for our fun Groundhog Day Sale, I had questions which need answers. A groundhog enjoying a dandelion The Main Event On February 2nd a groundhog will be unleashed, while the town folk gather round to observe its behavior. If the skies are clear enough, the groundhog will cast a shadow. Terrified of its own shadow, the groundhog will scurry back to its underground lair and six more weeks of bitter winter weather will follow. However, if the skies are cloudy, the light of the sun will be diffused; no shadow will appear and the groundhog will remain above ground, signalling an early spring. I always thought this counter-intuitive. Cloudy weather signifies an early spring, sunshine another bout of winter cold. Whatever, that’s the way the tradition is! But where did it come from? Origins of Groundhog Day Historical records indicate our Groundhog Day stems from the celebration of Candlemas, brought to the US as German-speaking immigrants settled in Pennsylvania. Candlemas involved the blessing and distribution of candles, needed during the dark, bleak winter months. Many European countries and cultures celebrated Candlemas or had similar after-winter traditions, and there are many similarities between this celebration and our modern Groundhog Day tradition. The Handwörterbuch des Deutschen Aberglaubens (Dictionary of German Folk Belief) records the use of Dachs (badgers) as weather-predictors. “If the badger encountered sunshine on Candlemas and therefore saw his shadow, he crawled back into his hole to stay four more weeks, which would be a continuation of winter weather” (Yoder, 52-53). Other variations of the tradition involve other animals too – bears, hedgehogs, foxes, for example – but there is a common thread of an animal awaking from hibernation, seeing its shadow, and retreating, signalling the continuance of winter. Groundhogs have similar season activity patterns (to badgers, the go-to animal of the era) and were locally available. The Candlemas tradition adapts, and is eventually Americanized as “Groundhog Day”. The first recorded mention of Groundhog Day in the US was February 2nd 1840, recorded in the diary of James L. Morris in Morgantown, Pennsylvania (The Pennsylvania Dutchman). Larger celebrations followed in Punxsutawney in the 1880’s and onward, carried out each year by the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club at Gobbler’s Knob (aside: Gobbler’s Knob is an amazing name). Groundhog Day, Gobbler’s Knob, Punxsutawney, PA, 2005 Marmot Minutiae The groundhog (Marmota monax, aka woodchuck, aka marmot) was long-ago known as Arctomys monax – translating to “bear-rat”. Perhaps the groundhog was far larger and more ferocious than the scurriers of today? Regardless, bear-rat gets my vote for best groundhog pseudonym. Stormfax.com maintains a record of the Phil’s accuracy! Since 1887, Phil’s maintained only a 39% accuracy rating. Punxsutawney Phil and the Groundhog Club have a Twitter Account which you should absolutely check out. Another name for groundhog is “whistle-pig”, stemming from the wide variety of crazy hisses, squeals, and chattering noises they can make. Hedgehogs can attain a top cruising speed of 8 mph. Their teeth grow 1/16″ each week. During their active feeding season, a groundhog commonly eats ~1/3 of their weight in vegetables each day. While hibernating, a groundhog’s heart rate slows to just 5 beats per minute. Correctly spelling “Punxsutawney” repeatedly throughout a blog post is challenging. The amount of wood that a woodchuck is capable of chucking, was once empirically proven to be 16 hectares. (note: this is complete nonsense – they can’t even chuck wood). Rain or Shine? What do you think we’ll get this year? I consider myself to be a hibernating creature, but I’m not afraid of my shadow and am definitely not a meteorologist. Back in my day, they were just called video games. My brother and I would wake up early every Saturday morning to dole out justice in the Mushroom Kingdom on our second hand NES. As the years passed, we found ourselves kickflipping with Tony Hawk on the N64, taking on the Umbrella Corp on the PS2, and barreling through DK Country on the Wii. But while we were fighting over the Player 1 controller, more serious gamers than us were beginning legitimate careers as eSports superstars. Competitive Gaming Emerges The first video game tournament was held in 1972 at Stanford University. The game was SpaceWar! and the prize was a year’s subscription to Rolling Stone magazine, the tournament’s sponsor. Throughout the 70’s and 80’s, local gaming competitions took place in arcades throughout the country, as games such as Space Invaders and Street Fighter gained popularity. Competition was fierce, although prizes were often little more than local fame and maybe a few candy bars. Larger competitions sponsored by Nintendo and Blockbuster Video (remember them?) were few and far between. Then in the 90’s, everything changed. The World Wide Web became a household word, and video games were changed forever. Suddenly, PC games were live. Players could join multiplayer games online and battle real opponents around the world from the comfort of their computer chair. The slow burn had finally ignited a wildfire of gaming competition possibility. As technology, connectivity, graphics, and games improved by leaps and bounds throughout the aughts, gaming competitions sprung up to test the mettle of dedicated gamers. As competitions became more fierce, prizes became more elaborate. In 2006, the Worldwide Webgames Championship awarded a $1 Million grand prize, thrusting eSports into the realm of legitimate competition. eSports Hits the Big Time Currently, eSports is a $906 million dollar industry. Competitions such as the Evolution Championship Series hosted in Las Vegas last year draw hundreds of competitors and thousands of spectators. Here in Portland, the annual Retro Gaming Expo has been home to the Tetris World Championship since 2010. The 2018 League of Legends World Championship, hosted in South Korea, garnered more viewers internationally than the Superbowl and the NCAA Final Four combined. Competitors vie for titles, fame and fortune, and of course, cold hard cash. Serious gamers require serious equipment. Competitive gamers spend upwards of 4 hours a day practicing their moves. A clear guide to buying a scooter
Choosing a scooter may seem like a simple task on the surface, but there is a lot of information to consider before deciding. Scooters come in different sizes, styles, and wheel options to consider. You will need to consider a number of factors and understanding your child’s needs is paramount. Some key questions to ask yourself before pulling the trigger on a purchase: Is my child old enough for a scooter? How advanced is my child’s balance and coordination? Where will my child enjoy riding their scooter? Would my child do best with a two-wheel or three-wheel scooter? The information ahead should help answer these questions and more. Can Your Child Handle a Scooter? If you’re wondering whether your child is old enough or coordinated enough to handle riding a scooter, the answer is almost certainly a resounding yes. There are a variety of scooter types, and some are even recommended for children as young as three years old. Chances are, if you are considering the possibility of a scooter, your child is at least three years old. On the other end of the spectrum, you may be wondering whether your child is too old for a scooter. The answer is probably no. Just there are scooter sizes and types that are perfectly fitting for a three-year-old, there are also great options for teenagers as well. In fact, the teenagers may even get the most enjoyment out of them as they begin to get adventurous with their riding. The other important question is whether your child would find a scooter to be enjoyable. This type of scooter uses a system of three small wheels for maximum stability. This is ideal for children as young as 2 years of age up to 6 years. These scooters are recommended for children no younger than 5 years old, with no maximum age. Bicycle style handlebars with brakes, and a two-wheel configuration. This higher deck means more skill is required to ride, but this means better clearance for kids who are into performing jumps and tricks on their scooter. If your child is under the age of 5 then a 3-wheel scooter is the best bet. For children who are in the 5–8-year-old range you can go with either polyurethane or 12” inflated rubber wheels. If your child is over 8 years old, or even younger if they are highly skilled, a scooter with 16” inflated rubber wheels is a fine choice. If storage space is limited, then it would be wise to consider a foldable kick scooter. Always check the weight capacity of the scooter, and make sure the handlebar height is no higher than your child’s hip. This is the ideal height for safely riding a scooter.
