A clear guide to buying a scooter
Choosing a scooter may seem like a simple task on the surface, but there is a lot of information to consider before deciding. Scooters come in different sizes, styles, and wheel options to consider. You will need to consider a number of factors and understanding your child’s needs is paramount. Some key questions to ask yourself before pulling the trigger on a purchase: Is my child old enough for a scooter? How advanced is my child’s balance and coordination? Where will my child enjoy riding their scooter? Would my child do best with a two-wheel or three-wheel scooter? The information ahead should help answer these questions and more. Can Your Child Handle a Scooter? If you’re wondering whether your child is old enough or coordinated enough to handle riding a scooter, the answer is almost certainly a resounding yes. There are a variety of scooter types, and some are even recommended for children as young as three years old. Chances are, if you are considering the possibility of a scooter, your child is at least three years old. On the other end of the spectrum, you may be wondering whether your child is too old for a scooter. The answer is probably no. Just there are scooter sizes and types that are perfectly fitting for a three-year-old, there are also great options for teenagers as well. In fact, the teenagers may even get the most enjoyment out of them as they begin to get adventurous with their riding. The other important question is whether your child would find a scooter to be enjoyable. As the parent, you know your child’s personality and interests better than anyone, so this one is primarily up to your own judgment. With that in mind, it is highly likely that your child would be able to find enjoyment in riding a scooter. One more consideration that you may be concerned about is whether your child has the coordination to ride a scooter. Fortunately, due to the wide variety of available options, you’ve got plenty of choices for scooters that offer high stability either due to having a three-wheel setup or by simply having smaller wheels. Contrary to what many believe, smaller wheels are better for stability due to lowering the center of gravity of the scooter deck. What Type of Scooter Should I Buy? 3-in-1 Scooters If you want to get your child started young, a 3-in-1 convertible scooter is a great option. This type of scooter transforms from a sliding walker to a push car, then finally to a small scooter when your child reaches the point where they can ride on their own. This type of scooter uses a system of three small wheels for maximum stability. This is ideal for children as young as 2 years of age up to 6 years. The Qaba 3-in-1 Kids Scooter is a great choice for the youngest children. Foldable Scooters with Small Polyurethane Wheels A kick scooter with small wheels allows the deck to sit low to the ground. This low center of gravity improves stability of the scooter and makes it easier to control. This stability improvement makes it a natural next step up from the 3-in-1 scooter and is best for children in the 3–8-year range. The foldable style allows for easy storage and transport which is another benefit to this style of scooter. A strong option for this type of scooter is an Aosom Kids Foldable Kick Scooter. 12-Inch Rubber Inflatable Wheel Scooter with Brakes The next scooter type we will look at is one with bicycle style handlebars, complete with brake handles. These are in the mid-range of wheel size, which means stability is still good but not quite as good as the small polyurethane wheels. The larger the wheel, the more speed can be attained. These scooters are recommended for children no younger than 5 years old, with no maximum age. This higher deck means more skill is required to ride, but this means better clearance for kids who are into performing jumps and tricks on their scooter. Tips for Selecting the Best Scooter To recap, here are some things to consider when deciding on the best scooter for your child. If your child is under the age of 5 then a 3-wheel scooter is the best bet. For children who are in the 5–8-year-old range you can go with either polyurethane or 12” inflated rubber wheels. If your child is over 8 years old, or even younger if they are highly skilled, a scooter with 16” inflated rubber wheels is a fine choice. If storage space is limited, then it would be wise to consider a foldable kick scooter. Always check the weight capacity of the scooter, and make sure the handlebar height is no higher than your child’s hip. This is the ideal height for safely riding a scooter. -
Celebrating our National Parks this 4th of July Weekend
Summer is in full swing! Next Thursday is America’s Birthday, commonly known as Independence Day. The 4th of July is one of the biggest camping weekends of the year. Whether you’re hitting up the local campground for a family reunion, or trekking out into one of America’s National Parks for a few days away from civilization, we’ve got the gear you need to make it Aosom! This 4th of July, we want to take a moment to highlight some of the Americans who made our preserved wild places possible: Carleton Watkins, John Muir, and Theodore Roosevelt. Three men who, at the turn of the 20th century, set the stage for the National Parks and Forests that we are able to appreciate and enjoy today. Carleton Watkins Carleton Watkins was a 19th century landscape photographer who captured America’s imagination with his photographs of the American West. He used a revolutionary stereoscope camera to create unprecedented images of wild landscapes, focusing specifically on California’s Yosemite Valley. Watkins’ photographs brought the beauty of the West to the world. “In part because of Watkins’ Yosemite pictures, in 1864 Congress passed and President Lincoln signed legislation preserving Yosemite Valley. The law was an important first step in the creation of the National Park Service in 1916. In 1865, Mount Watkins in Yosemite was named after Carleton Watkins.”(1). Watkins’ early forays into environmental conservatism laid the foundation for environmentalism in American politics. John Muir “And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul.” John Muir was a naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, and lifelong advocate for the preservation of wild places in the American West. Known as the “Patron Saint of the American Wilderness,” Muir co-founded the conservation organization The Sierra Club in 1892. The Sierra Club worked to establish the National Forests and put protected lands under federal jurisdiction. A Scottish immigrant, Muir devoted his life to the preservation of western forests. Muir was a contemporary of Watkins, and the two spent time together in Yosemite. Muir studied Watkin’s iconic photographs of Yosemite Valley and its features, including El Capitan, while Watkins photographed Muir amongst the trees and valleys he fought to preserve. Theodore Roosevelt America’s 25th president, Teddy Roosevelt was a lifelong naturalist and environmental conservationist. In 1903, President Roosevelt met with John Muir in Yosemite. The two embarked on a backcountry camping trip through the Yosemite Valley, which had a profound impact upon both. About the experience, Roosevelt was quoted, saying “Lying out at night under those giant Sequoias was like lying in a temple built by no hand of man, a temple grander than any human architect could by any possibility build.”(2). Muir helped convince Roosevelt of the need for Federal regulation of designated wild places, and the importance of preservation over resource conservation. During his presidency from 1901-1909, Roosevelt used his Executive Order powers to establish National Parks, Forests, and Monuments to preserve natural resources, and provide protections for both land and wildlife. Yosemite Valley was the focal point for early conservation efforts. It’s rich valleys, sheer rock mountain faces, clear rivers, and towering sequoias inspired early naturalists and conservationists to action. How to Choose the Best Playsets for Your Little One
Sparking your child’s imagination through play is a wonderful (and scientifically backed!) way to support their healthy and happy development. Pretend play toys can be very helpful to achieve this. These are toys such as mini houses, food sets, workbenches, nursery sets, and more. But with so many options available, how do you even begin to pick the perfect playset for your little one? How Are Playsets Categorized? Age When it comes to selecting the right type of playset, one of the first things you’ll want to consider is your child’s age. So, when browsing for your kid’s first playset, filter by their age first. If your child is only 18 months, for example, you will need to rule out all of the 3+ toys. Is your child over the age of three? Then, you will immediately realize that the choice is wider, as a child of this age can safely handle and play with a larger range of objects. Interests Another useful factor to consider when choosing your kid’s playset is by understanding what they are interested in. If your little one is very young and not talking clearly yet, you can simply observe them at play. At this age, they might be drawn to musical toys, or they might start to show a preference for cars, construction blocks, workbenches, or dolls’ houses. As your child gets older, you can ask them what they love to play with, which will enable you to narrow down your search and only focus on those playsets that you know they will enjoy. Is this space safe, or does it require constant adult supervision? If you have a large area in your lounge, kitchen, or child’s bedroom, then you can opt for bigger items such as tepees, large workbenches, and big dolls’ houses. Perhaps, your child even has a dedicated playroom where you can fit pretty much anything they like, including items like toy kitchens and ride-on toy trucks. Is space a problem? Don’t worry, because pretend play can still happen successfully in small areas! Simply ensure that the toys that you pick are not going to crowd the entire area, as you will need to leave some space for your child to move around and play. You will also want to pay attention to any sharp corners or other parts of the room that might not be safe for your child. If you are worried about any of that, the best thing to do is to child-proof the room (or area) before even buying any playsets. In small areas, you might want to prioritize buying playsets that are taller as opposed to wider. These include, for example, toy car garage playsets, vanity tables, and certain dolls’ houses and kitchen sets. Budget You might also want to give some thought to the price that you are happy to pay for your kid’s toys. If you are buying a playset for a special occasion, such as a birthday, then you might feel like spending a bit more.
