4 Things to Consider When Choosing a New Chicken Coop
Coops provide a comfortable lair for your hens to feel safe and relaxed. Roosts and nesting boxes are usually up off the ground because in the wild, these types of birds would look for safety in trees and bushes – these elevated areas help mimic their natural behavior. D51-091 Chickens need a coup even if you had your heart set on a sedan: Having the right chicken coup is an integral part of keeping your flock happy and healthy. Your coup will offer your hens a place to 1) relax and feel safe 2) an area to sleep at night 3) a zone not accessible to predators and 4) a different area for your birds to retreat to if they need to take a break from another member of their flock. Do your breed research: Bird keeping, of any kind, is a big responsibility. Doing your due diligence on the specific needs of your breed, before starting your plan of animal husbandry, will pay in dividends to the wellbeing of your flock and to your sanity. The type, size and number number of coops you will need depends on many factors including, but not limited to, the number of birds, their size, their breed, and how much outdoor or free range space you can provide in additional to their indoor accommodations. Enough space inside and out: Make sure to have enough roosting space and nesting space. Most of the time chickens do a good job of organizing themselves but if you are having a high turn-over or if you are growing your flock at significant rate, it is important to make sure you have enough roosting space at the right height to avoid fighting and squabbles that might hurt the chickens and give cause for concern. Larger birds tend to roost higher and tend to be higher in the pecking order. Smaller hens need perches lower to the ground. Again, you’ll want to make sure you are providing the right accommodations for your birds based on their needs. Check out our blog on setting up free-range chicken garden areas for lots of helpful information in letting your chicken roam and mix with your plants. If you are getting a smaller coup that you can’t walk into, having a pull out tray for easy cleaning will help your birds stay healthy and save your back and knees. Add perches, as necessary. Our coops come with a perch, but you may need to add more perches or adjust the height of your perches depending on the sizes and numbers of your friendly flock. You will want to research and determine how big your roosts should be, and how much space you should allow for each chicken. In general they need less space in winter when they roost closer together and a little more in summer, when it is warmer. Happy, clean coups equals happy chickens! Ultimate Grilling Guide for Summer Cookouts and Backyard BBQs
Aosom’s Ultimate Grilling Guide WARNING: THIS BLOG WILL MAKE YOU HUNGRY! I’m gonna let you guys in on a little secret: you can grill ANYTHING. Hotdogs, hamburgers, steaks, drumsticks? Of course. Corn on the cob, pineapple rings, shrimp skewers? Sure thing. Stuffed jalapeno peppers, bacon wrapped brussels sprouts, entire romaine hearts? Who’s gonna stop you?! Learn how to take your grilling to the next level and impress your friends and family this summer with our Ultimate Grilling Guide! Grilling Guide: Steak: Grill on High Heat Internal Temp: At least 130F Remove from refrigerator 20- 30 minutes before grilling Only flip once! Chicken: Grill on Medium Heat Internal Temp: 165F Marinate for up to 6 hours ahead of time Pork: Grill on Medium Heat Internal Heat: 145F Marinate for up to 6 hours ahead of time Seafood/ Salmon: Grill on High Heat Internal Temp: 145F Cook on top of citrus slices or in a cast iron pan to prevent sticking Burgers: Grill on High Heat Internal Temp: At least 130F Add a pat of butter or icecube to keep meat moist Season burger patties sparingly Kebabs: Grill on Medium to High Heat Internal Temp varies (see above for meat temps) Soak wood skewers in water for 20 minutes before putting your kebabs together. This will keep the wood from burning on the grill. If you find your goodies are sliding around on the skewer when you turn then, try using two skewers about ¼” apart. This will keep everything in place as you move it. Grill More Than Meat: The BBQ is definitely not just for hot dogs and steaks anymore. Grilling vegetables is fast and easy, not to mention delicious. Larger vegetables like corn on the cob, eggplant slices, and pineapple can go directly onto the grill, but what about smaller veggies, like zucchini, asparagus, or mushrooms? For little guys, you can always skewer them, or use a grilling basket or pan to keep them corralled. Innovative Tips and Tricks to try this summer: No grill basket? Try using a cast iron skillet in place of a grill basket to cook small vegetables or seafood. Got salmon steaks or other seafood? Try grilling fish on a bed of lemons. A layer of thinly sliced lemons between your fish and the grill will keep it from sticking and deliver a burst of added flavor. Hate dry burgers? Try adding an ice cube or pat of butter to the center of burgers when forming patties. As it melts, it will keep the interior of the burger nice and juicy! Love smokey flavor? Add a touch of smoke to your grilled goods by wrapping wood chips in tin foil, poking a few holes in the packet, and throwing it on the grill with your meats and veggies! Grilling something large or awkwardly shaped, like spatchcocked chicken? Wrap a brick in tinfoil and place it on top of the meat. This will help the meat cook more evenly. Struggling to light the charcoal grill? Try loading up a cardboard egg carton with charcoal briquettes. Light the whole thing in the grill- the egg carton will act as kindling, and by the time it burns off, the charcoal will be started. Can’t get enough salt? Try placing a Himalayan salt block directly onto the grill, and then place your skewers or steaks on top of the salt block. This will give you an even cooking surface, and help season your victuals. Love Beer Can Chicken? Try something new by switching the beer can for canned red or Rosé wine. Grilling steak? Take the meat out of the fridge about 30 minutes before you plan to cook it. Letting steaks reach room temperature before cooking ensures that it cooks evenly and helps you achieve that perfect sear. Marinating? Apply the marinade as early as possible for maximum flavor. Make sure to save some of the marinade to glaze the meat with as you grill! Want to upgrade your lemonade (or Coronas)? Try grilling your lemons on the BBQ before slicing to add a sweet and smoky flavor to your beverages. Toast your buns! There’s nothing innovative about this one- toasted buns are just better! Ride-on toys and rocking horses buying guide for parents
As kids start growing up, they start needing different toys — ideally, toys that will help them hone and develop the necessary skills in life. For example, when children start walking, a rocking horse is a great toy to help them achieve elementary balance and learn how to coordinate with their arms and legs. And once they master the art of basic movement, they begin being drawn to toys that allow them a feeling of faster motion — like ride-on cars, scooters, and go-karts. After all, that’s why we love adult-sized vehicles as well; they’re simply fun. With that in mind, it’s no wonder your kid starts asking for a toy bike or car as soon as they realize such toys exist. They’ve got lights, noises, and some cool gadgets — even a kid who hasn’t seen a real car up to that point would be intrigued. However, choosing the right ride-on cars and rocking horses that will be the perfect fit for your child is not always simple. And that’s why we’ve prepared a buying guide for curious parents! Younger kids that don’t have as much experience with ride-on toys can easily tip them over if you get a toy that doesn’t provide enough balance on its own. This is where the size of the toy also comes into play — make sure you pick something that’s appropriate for your kid’s height, weight, and age; the last thing you want is for them to be cramped while riding or driving. This is particularly important for ride-on toys, as they need to have sufficiently powerful and responsive brakes so that your kids can stop in front of an obstacle — or allowing you to stop for them using the remote control. That’s why even the most robust models like this kids’ SUV truck has firm seatbelts for both of its seats. It’s worth noting that this doesn’t just concern the toy itself. Even if you buy them the safest ride-on toy on the market, ensure your kids know how to properly operate it by teaching them in detail. Also, provide them with protective gear like gloves and helmets — and most crucially, never leave them unsupervised while they’re riding around, at least when they’re younger. Design While choosing the right ride-on toy for your kids requires you to think about plenty of practicalities like safety and manufacturing quality — you’ll probably want to think about the toy’s aesthetics as well. After all, a premium-quality ride-on toy isn’t the cheapest thing you can get for your kid — so you want to make sure they’ll actually like how it looks. Also, let’s be honest — toddlers and preschoolers don’t have a very intricate taste in cars. So, a lot of it comes down to what the parents like; some would like to see their kid in a hippie pink Volkswagen Beetle, while others think a sleek BMW would be way cooler. Voltage One of the features that dictate what kind of powered ride-on toy is appropriate for what kid is its power. The power capabilities differ from model to model, and they’re usually expressed in voltages. Besides design and secondary features, this is the main difference between a 6V Audi and a 12V SUV Truck. If you’re not sure which power level is best for your child, the general rule of thumb is that younger kids do better with slower ride-on cars; these provide them a level of control that’s appropriate for their current level of motor skills. A toddler doesn’t really need an aggressively fast vehicle — you want them to have fun, but you also want them to stay safe. Ease of control When you’re buying a ride-on vehicle for a kid that’s between 3 and 6, you’re probably hoping they’ll improve their reflexes and general coordination. However, even if you’re getting something slower like a 6V ride-on firetruck, your kids will still need supervision. That’s why it’s important for these ride-on cars to have two modes of operation — one where the kid uses pedals and a steering wheel, and another where you can make the necessary adjustments to their movement via a remote control. Other fun features At the end of the day, these are toys and they’re supposed to be fun — which is why you want the kids to have access to neat stuff like working headlights, a funny horn, or even a bluetooth connection that lets you play music in the ride-on toys via their tiny speakers! -
