Choosing the best push and pedal ride-on toys for kids
For all parents, there’s no greater joy than seeing your kids’ smile when you buy them a brand new cool toy. And that’s the most rewarding when they’re at their youngest — you won’t see a purer joy on a kid’s face than when they see their very own ride-on toy. Not only do these toys provide them with countless hours of fun — but they also help kids develop their general coordination and fine and gross motor skills. With this in mind, finding the right toys is essential because it will affect how children learn to interact with their environment. And sure, when they get a little older, there are plenty of electric ride-on toys you can find for them — but when your little one is just a toddler, they’re definitely not ready for a motorized ride-on car. Of course, that’s no reason why they can’t start enjoying ride-on toys in general; you just need to find some great push and pedal ride-on toys for them. With a great toy like this, your kid will start honing their spatial coordination as early as possible, and you’ll be encouraging them to explore their surroundings as well! Keeping that in mind, not all push and pedal ride-ons are the same. There are plenty of options on the market, and it’s easy for parents to become overwhelmed and indecisive. Push ride-on toys As you’ll see on most manufacturer specifications, push ride-on toys are typically designed for kids between 18 and 36 months old. They’re mostly made out of sturdy plastic, and you’ll find they come in a huge variety of styles. Most of them also have some sort of tall plastic handlebar that allows parents to steer and push the kids as they play. Some even include a small handlebar, so that the kids can get some exercise by pushing their ride-on as well when they’re not on it. These are intended for kids that already know how to walk, allowing them to focus more on coordination and balance as they play. Pedal ride-on toys Once kids are ready to start learning stuff on their own, a pedal ride-on toy will be perfect for them. These are mostly intended for children who are between 2 and 4 years old — at that age, the average kid can maneuver such ride-ons safely. Plus, their low-to-the-ground nature makes them excellent practice for bigger bikes and motorized ride-ons that’ll come later. A lot of the pedal-propelled ride-ons come in a tricycle design, allowing kids to become comfortable with the combo of pedals and handlebars. Naturally, you can still push them around — but they’ll get the feeling of control along with the thrill of riding. And when they strike out on their own, they’ll obtain the necessary skills that’ll come in handy with their first real bike later. How to choose the best push and pedal ride-on toys When you’re choosing a push and pedal toy for your kids, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First of all, as all parents know, the safety of your child is paramount in any situation — even when buying toys. In this case, make sure that the ride-ons have the ASTM F963 safety validation — this is the necessary safety standard set by the entire industry. This exists to ensure there are no pinch points, sharp edges, or anything else that could be dangerous to your kid. Or maybe, your wife needs you to install that chic new sliding barn door that she found online? All these tasks require a certain amount of aptitude and accessibility to your tools. But what happens when your poor little plastic tool bucket can no longer keep up with the amount of tools that you need? Well, things get messy. Instead, of spending 20 minutes in the garage each time you go looking for an Allen wrench, maybe it’s time that you considered upgrading your tiny tool box into a rolling tool chest. An investment in a tool chest is the perfect solution for individuals looking to get the most possible storage space, while ensuring that all of your tools are organized and won’t get damaged. Furthermore, as you acquire more tools over the years your poor little plastic tool box won’t be able to support the additional weight that you’ve now added to it. Sometimes we forget – tools are friggin’ heavy! Well maybe you didn’t forget, but I certainly forgot this and as a result, it caused a huge headache for me. Back when I had my old plastic tool box, I was happy that I was able to place my first new cordless drill inside of it to accompany me on all of the small projects around the house. Then Christmas happened and my mother-in-law bought me another drill that was more heavy duty. Hey, I wasn’t going to complain. I had just scored a sweet new drill kit. But when I forced strategically placed my new drill into the same plastic tool box, I didn’t account for the extra weight that I had added. Then one day, my wife asked me to set up a wall mount for our new flat screen tv. I dutifully headed to the garage, grabbed my trusted heavy tool kit, and headed back into the house. Not more than 3 paces into the house, the toolbox latch snapped open and my heart sank as I heard two distinctly loud ‘crunches’ amidst all of the falling nails, screws and wrenches. I looked down to see that each of the drills left two huge gashes in the wooden floor. So after a costly floor repair and one very upset wife later, I learned a very valuable lesson. I decided that it would be in everyone’s best interest if I confronted my organization problem and invested in a tool chest. Standing Tool Chest vs Roll-Around Tool Chest: Which is Better? Keep in mind that the tool chest that you should be looking for should meet your specific needs; not your cousin Ray or the neighbor down the street. Let’s review two of the most common tool chests to determine if you are a Standing Tool Chest guy or more of a Roll-Around Tool Chest guy. The Standing Tool Chest These are significantly larger and sturdier than your regular tool boxes. Because of their size, these standing tool chests are strong feature pieces in the garage that keep your tools organized. Standing tool chests come with locked cabinets to keep the little ones away from the heavy duty tools, many of the newer models come with wheels that lock that make relocating easy, and most models come with five drawers that vary in size. [alert type=”info” close=”false”]Pro Tip: Focus on purchasing a tool chest that has more width than what you think you’ll need. The wider the drawer size the more accessible your tools will be. Otherwise, if the drawers are too deep it will be like placing your tools at the bottom of a filing cabinet.[/alert] Also, a standing tool chest can double as a strong and even worktable. No more do you have to precariously balance your workshop projects on the big chest freezer in the garage. If space is the biggest concern for you, I would highly suggest getting a standing tool chest to start out. The Roll-Around Tool Chest Often referred to as the “mechanics tool chests,” this is a perfect option for craftsmen that have tool intensive projects that require that their tools be close by. These roll-around tool chests often times have a flat surface on top so you can sit down on it while you work. This means that changing your car tires just got a lot easier! The roll-around tool chest is also completely stackable. Since the top has a flat surface you can easily add some additional storage by purchasing a middle chest to stack on top with some additional locked drawers. Unlike the standing tool chest, if budget is your biggest concern then I would suggest starting with a roll-around tool chest first. As your tool collection grows you will be to add more storage pieces to your tool chest as needed. In the end, I personally went for the standing tool chest. As it allowed me to really free up a lot of needed space in the garage. Coincidentally, after completing this project I stumbled across a win-win situation. Once we were able to free up the space, not only was I able to park my car back in the garage, I was able to fit in a chest freezer for my wife so that she can practice her canning and preserving hobbies. -
Groundhog Day: Some Historical Context + Marmot Minutiae
Groundhog Day will soon be here! A moment, a choice approaches near. Do we get six weeks of drear, or rays of sunshine shining clear? Apologies for the verse – please don’t be terse… Groundhog Day is one of our more eccentric traditions. Each year, the news cycle briefly touches on the ritual, and these days it’s viewed more as a passing amusement than a predictor of fate. Some may already know the origin and history of the Groundhog Day tradition. However, as we prepare for our fun Groundhog Day Sale, I had questions which need answers. A groundhog enjoying a dandelion The Main Event On February 2nd a groundhog will be unleashed, while the town folk gather round to observe its behavior. If the skies are clear enough, the groundhog will cast a shadow. Terrified of its own shadow, the groundhog will scurry back to its underground lair and six more weeks of bitter winter weather will follow. However, if the skies are cloudy, the light of the sun will be diffused; no shadow will appear and the groundhog will remain above ground, signalling an early spring. I always thought this counter-intuitive. Cloudy weather signifies an early spring, sunshine another bout of winter cold. Whatever, that’s the way the tradition is! But where did it come from? Origins of Groundhog Day Historical records indicate our Groundhog Day stems from the celebration of Candlemas, brought to the US as German-speaking immigrants settled in Pennsylvania. Candlemas involved the blessing and distribution of candles, needed during the dark, bleak winter months. Many European countries and cultures celebrated Candlemas or had similar after-winter traditions, and there are many similarities between this celebration and our modern Groundhog Day tradition. The Handwörterbuch des Deutschen Aberglaubens (Dictionary of German Folk Belief) records the use of Dachs (badgers) as weather-predictors. “If the badger encountered sunshine on Candlemas and therefore saw his shadow, he crawled back into his hole to stay four more weeks, which would be a continuation of winter weather” (Yoder, 52-53). Other variations of the tradition involve other animals too – bears, hedgehogs, foxes, for example – but there is a common thread of an animal awaking from hibernation, seeing its shadow, and retreating, signalling the continuance of winter. Groundhogs have similar season activity patterns (to badgers, the go-to animal of the era) and were locally available. The Candlemas tradition adapts, and is eventually Americanized as “Groundhog Day”. The first recorded mention of Groundhog Day in the US was February 2nd 1840, recorded in the diary of James L. Morris in Morgantown, Pennsylvania (The Pennsylvania Dutchman). Larger celebrations followed in Punxsutawney in the 1880’s and onward, carried out each year by the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club at Gobbler’s Knob (aside: Gobbler’s Knob is an amazing name). Groundhog Day, Gobbler’s Knob, Punxsutawney, PA, 2005 Marmot Minutiae The groundhog (Marmota monax, aka woodchuck, aka marmot) was long-ago known as Arctomys monax – translating to “bear-rat”. Perhaps the groundhog was far larger and more ferocious than the scurriers of today? Regardless, bear-rat gets my vote for best groundhog pseudonym. Stormfax.com maintains a record of the Phil’s accuracy! Since 1887, Phil’s maintained only a 39% accuracy rating. Punxsutawney Phil and the Groundhog Club have a Twitter Account which you should absolutely check out. Another name for groundhog is “whistle-pig”, stemming from the wide variety of crazy hisses, squeals, and chattering noises they can make. Hedgehogs can attain a top cruising speed of 8 mph. Their teeth grow 1/16″ each week. During their active feeding season, a groundhog commonly eats ~1/3 of their weight in vegetables each day. While hibernating, a groundhog’s heart rate slows to just 5 beats per minute. Correctly spelling “Punxsutawney” repeatedly throughout a blog post is challenging. The amount of wood that a woodchuck is capable of chucking, was once empirically proven to be 16 hectares. (note: this is complete nonsense – they can’t even chuck wood). Rain or Shine? Sticking to a schedule will make it easier to predict when bathroom time will be needed. I suggest a firm routine of: outside, pee, poop, praise and then supervised free time. Step 3: Similarly, you should take your pet out to the same spot every time to ensure that the scent will remind them what to do and where. Step 4: Go outside with your pet and stay with them while they do their business to reassure them that what they’re doing is correct. Step 5: Reward your pet and offer them extra attention and treats after they go. This will provide positive reinforcement and association with good behavior.
