So You’re Going Camping: 11 Camping Hacks to Ensure You Come Back in One Piece
Ah, camping. The sights, the sounds, the smells. Nothing finer than that time-honored tradition celebrating nature and your insignificance in it. Pale-white skin that hasn’t seen the sun in months. Too-loud-for-their-own-good campers. The taste of charred hot dogs. But it doesn’t always have to be that way! With a little work, you can make a decent weekend out of it despite all the things actively trying to kill you. And so without further ado, I present to you these simple camping hacks that will make you miss the safety of your couch only about half of the time. 1) How to approach Thorny Situations With all that wood out there you’re bound to get a splinter or two eventually. This can be annoying if your new sharp wooden friend gets stuck so deep in your skin that tweezers won’t be able to help. However, if you have a banana peel then you’re in luck. Simply slap a small piece of that peel on your skin above the splinter with a Band-Aid on top and in a day or two it’ll be out. 2) What a Bright Idea Once the sun goes down you’re mostly faced with two options for light. Pitch-black or deer-in-the-headlights bright. Find a nice, in-between balance with this camping hack. Strap a headlamp to your water bottle with the light facing inward and you’ll create ambient lighting that’s not too harsh on your eyes but enough to keep the bears away. 3) Stay Away from Over Bear’ing Guests Speaking of bears, be careful not to leave any food in your car unless you want some unexpected visitors. Bears have been known to thoroughly investigate a car for food and, upon finding it, for even more food. There’s nothing worse than coming back to a wrecked vehicle at the end of your camping trip. Be sure to hang your food in trees or better yet, in an air-tight bear canister. Click here to save on camping tents. Minus the bears! 4) Burn Clean Starting a fire can be difficult. Make it easier by pouring a little hand sanitizer over your kindling to really fuel those flames. Just make sure you leave enough for after your meal. And try not to get too close if you’re wearing certain synthetic fibers. No need to turn great camping hacks into camping hazards! 5) Or Burn Junk Food Another backup plan is to use potato or corn chips (any kind) to help start a fire. This is one of my favorite camping hacks because someone almost always brings some heavily processed corn product to snack on and they can make the difference between shivering through the night and cozying up to the warm glow of a campfire. 6) Your Portable Sud Station Unfortunately, cleanliness is not always the priority while camping. With a little bit of future planning, this trick can be one of your greatest camping hacks for all of you germaphobes. The next time you go through a container of laundry detergent, don’t throw it out! Save it for your next camping trip as a simple hand washing station. Because there’ll still be soap residue inside, you can just fill it with water for a fine mixture that keeps hands clean. 7) Ice, Ice, Baby! Rather than wasting money and space on bags of ice, freeze a couple of gallons of water and bring those in your cooler. They’ll keep your other food cold and become a handy source of drinking water later on. 8) Solving the Comfy Bunk Puzzle Let’s face it; the forest floor is not the comfiest place to sleep on. It’s why beds were invented. Instead, try padding the bottom of your tent with foam tiles so that you don’t have to feel every stick and rock underneath your feet. Even if you’re not lying directly on the ground, you’ll appreciate this camping hack’s charm for not having you walk on the cold, hard ground at night. Whether to get clean or to finally escape all the bugs and mosquitoes, it’s a good idea to hook your keys up to a wine cork or similar flotation device. That way when you finally drown in the water, intentionally or on accident, your keys will at least rise to the surface so your friends can get home. 10) Fight Itching and Cavities at the Same Time Unfortunately, no matter how many camping hacks you employ, you’ll never be able to escape from every last insect that wants a piece of you out in the woods. At some point, you WILL end up itchy. Try toothpaste. It works wonders as a soothing cure once you’ve been made a meal of. 11) Always Pack a Spare Congratulations. You’ve somehow reached the end of your camping trip without falling off a cliff or setting the woods on fire (probably). Well you don’t want to go home looking and smelling like a hobo do you? Make sure to always keep a set of clean clothes and some deodorant in your car for the journey home to make you feel a little better or in case you decide to stop for food on the way home. There’s nothing quite like kicking back in your own private outdoor oasis with a cold beer or frosty margarita. My favorite part of summer is lounging on my patio in my vintage wicker armchairs, adult beverage in hand, dogs at my feet. You can catch me out there all summer reading books, annoying the neighbors with my unfortunate musical tastes, or yukking it up with friends. To spice up my outdoor space this year, I’m checking out these patio trends for outdoor decor inspiration. Our Favorite Patio Trends to Try This Year Lighting Outdoor lighting is all the rage this year. Great lighting makes your patio space super useable, safe, and inviting. This is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to update your patio. Since I have a small space, I’m looking at putting up some strings of fairy lights. If you have a larger area, opt for longer strings of naked bulbs, or put up poles to create a lighted outpost in your backyard. Look for LED lights that can be controlled by your phone for maximum convenience. Dual Purpose Furniture Functionality in design is experiencing a revival, which is good news for those of us with small spaces. Storage benches and poufs or ottomans that can pull double duty as tables all provide functional versatility. These pieces help you make the most out of a smaller patio space, and their dual functionality makes them more wallet-friendly, too. Fire Pits Who can resist that primal draw to a fire? Fire pits make an ideal focal point to any patio. Both decorative and functional, fire pits give your guests a place to gather. They also let you extend your patio season into the cooler fall months, as you can cozy up around the fire when the nights start to get chilly. Outdoor Kitchens and Bars This trend has been steadily growing in popularity the last few years. Don’t waste precious daylight trekking back and forth to the kitchen this summer. Mix and Match Materials Matching is so last year. Don’t be afraid to mix metal and wood for an industrial look, or wicker with ceramics for a softer style. Creating visual contrast adds a dynamic element to your patio space. To contrast with my wicker furniture, I picked up a chic dark grey ceramic planter for my lavender plant, Loretta. Because how are you supposed to talk to your plants if they don’t have names? Accent Pieces and Pops of Color Tasteful, muted neutrals will never go out of style. Adding a pop of color with funky throw pillows or bright cushions will liven up your patio and keep your look up to date. Healthy at Any Age: How to Avoid Childhood Obesity
Childhood obesity has become such an epidemic that the topic has even caught the attention of the First Lady. From nutrition policies in schools to after school programs based on physical education, childhood obesity has become one of the largest health crisis’ in the country. As early onset diabetes and other health problems are direct results of childhood obesity. Many of these issues can be traced directly to long-term health risks that accompany a person throughout their life. However, there is hope! With the proper mindset, resources and tools you can begin to develop fun healthy habits to help your young ones easily shed those extra pounds. Setting Good Habits The first line of defense against childhood obesity begins in the home where the virtues of both exercise and eating well are instilled at an early age. Here are a few ways to avoid childhood obesity in your family by creating patterns that they can follow for an entire lifetime of healthy living. What is of primary importance is building strong habits over time that will begin to feel like natural instinct. Healthy habits can be developed really early on where what a child does for fun often develops out of the activities that are encouraged between the parent and the child. This means that if a Dad focuses on eating potato chips and watching television every Saturday, then this is exactly the behavior the child will find natural as they get older. If, on the other hand, you make regular gym exercise the focus of shared household activities, then you will find that your child will naturally feel the need to remain healthy. How to Kickstart your Child’s Weightloss A new trend to answer this question is to provide small kids with their own exercise equipment that they can use to model what their parents and older mentors do. Exercise bikes, treadmills, rowing machines, and a variety of other equipment types have models that are perfect for their age range, even down to just three or four years old. These types of at home fitness equipment are often primarily for a child to learn the behavior. Practicing on something like the child-sized treadmill can be an easy way to keep them moving while they lounge indoors. The toddler-sized exercise bikes are great when set next to your exercise bike, allowing the children and parents to work out together. This sets the trend and will increase the chances for them to continue this behavior as they get older. More than just engaging in a regular workout regimen, integrating physical activities for recreation is going to be important at an early age. Bring home a basketball hoop that they can use in the driveway to encourage physical fun on a regular basis, and make sure to volunteer to play these games with your child from time-to-time. This will put a physical activity on the menu instead of letting the child resort strictly to things like video games. If you start the connection to fun forms of physical exertion then your kids will want to continue these activities into their teenage years. It will also be one of the primary ways that they avoid those extra pounds and set themselves up for a stable and efficient cardiovascular system. You could also try getting them hooked on unique activities, such as impressing people by riding a unicycle. Getting a trampoline is a classic, and can be a great way to bring people together while keeping the whole family fit. The same can be true of family hiking and camping trips. It may also be good to begin introducing significant lifestyle changes that take a look at health and wellness holistically through a mind and body connection. Yoga and Pilates are a great way to focus on whole body health, and can be great for things like reducing the chance of injuries and chronic neck and back pain. Try starting a slow and steady yoga regimen with your kids by getting them a beginner’s kit, and then eventually working up to ball and mat-based exercises. Core strength, flexibility, and general muscle tone are all going to help to reduce taking on extra weight. If you are looking to extend the physical activity even further, then the best way to do this is to enroll them in structured activities or classes. Gymnastics and martial arts are both incredibly popular right now, and what is nice is you can bring their practice at home by turning an empty space in the home into your own little studio. This is incredibly easy when using a high-quality gymnastic mat so that they can practice routines, or generally have a space to be physical in that allows for some cushion and support. Team sports are also an obvious solution but try really observing where your child’s interest are so that you can try to find something that they will be excited about and voluntarily continue throughout their youth and even into their adult years as a point of fitness. Poor dietary options are one of the primary reasons that younger kids are experiencing a rise in average BMI and increased rates of illness. This often comes from the consumption of fast-food in the busy household lifestyle, as well as the lack of access to quality food for many low-income families. Many people are now looking for dietary goals and restrictions that can reflect a more consistent healthy diet to avoid obesity. Should I Consider a Vegetarian or Vegan Lifestyle? The whole foods, plant-based diet has become popular and is a great way of avoiding processed foods, having nutrition dense meals, and creating eating patterns for the family. Oftentimes parents go adopt a vegetarian diet, thinking that this will automatically be healthier. While it is healthy, in many ways, you should note that you often have to up the heavy dairy intake and this alone can continue weight gain and further increase a person’s cholesterol. Vegan diets are again easier to reduce caloric intake, but require much more work to create tasty dishes because you are no longer relying on the strong flavors of dairy and animal fat. What is often best is to strike a balance; focusing on green vegetables and fruits, lowering the amount of meat your family consumes, and switching to lean meat and fish when possible. A great way to get kids excited about healthy meals is to actually invite them into the kitchen to cook with you, which also develops a useful skill for them and starts the habit of cooking meals in the home.
