Whether you have been an avid camper or have recently discovered the joy of spending recreational time outdoors, comfort eventually becomes a concern. Not ready for full glamping? Is the idea of another night on the ground equivalent to getting a tooth pulled? Enjoy the freedom of the outdoors but also get a good night’s sleep. Consider Size Before Buying Camper Cots Today’s cots have a lot to offer for providing comfort even in the most remote settings. To find the best sleeping cot for you, here are some size considerations. The length and width of sleeping cots have gone through improvements to make them suitable for people of all sizes. The standard length is 6 feet, but some cots have extended lengths. An extended width of your cot will add comfort if you are sleeping with someone else or just want to be a bed hog. For those of us that enjoy the snug comfort of being cradled in our sleeping bag, single sizes are still available. Take the height of the cot into consideration. If it is too low to the ground, getting up can be a challenge for many campers. The extra height also provides a storage area under the cot. Weight Capacity Is Important You can read descriptions for the amount of body weight a camping cot will support, but also consider the design. Many cots have been improved to hold more weight but be sure that the weight is distributed so that you are not sinking in the middle. Look for quality stabilizing bars and heavy-duty fabrics. Oxford fabric is often the preferred choice for camping equipment because it offers these features plus superior breathability to keep you from getting sweaty. The materials used in the frame should also be weather resistant. Look for quality aluminum for lightweight options. For increased strength, steel is preferred but is heavier to carry. Look for steel that is powder-coated for rust prevention. Sleeping out in the open air is so enjoyable for star gazing and a feeling of fully connecting with nature. Artificial Christmas trees were first created using wood and feathers by the Germans some time in during the 1800s. They are imitation fir and pine trees used as decorations the same way authentic Christmas trees are used. Today, they are made primarily with PVC plastics due to them being lightweight and relatively inexpensive. They come in a variety of styles, shapes, sizes, and colors. We will handle each in turn and turn you into an artificial Christmas tree buying wizard. Small Trees Small trees can be placed in a variety of places around the house. They can be fully put together and decorated within minutes. They are great as centerpieces or a filler for side tables and empty spaces in walkways. Large Trees Large trees are what you would imagine putting your presents under. Large artificial trees can be put together in under 30 minutes, and are just as fun to decorate as real trees. They are intended for larger spaces and are more durable and longer-lasting than traditional trees. These usually are easy to disassemble and put away for the following years. Green Trees Still the norm as a color for a Christmas tree, green is the color most choose to go with. The traditional dark green color of a Christmas tree can give the illusion of the real thing. This works especially well if your decorations are more rustic and warm. Passerbys will never know the difference as they catch a glimpse of your tree through your window. Colored Trees It is becoming more common for artificial trees to be made in different colors– the most common being white, pink, and blue. These colors can add a pop to your overall theme. Bright colors such as white and pink can give a modern and clean feel to your space. Colors like red can go great with warm rustic themes. PVC vs PE Trees Most artificial trees are made with either PVC plastic or Polyethylene (PE) plastic. PVC trees tend to look more artificial. The needles are flat and flimsy. They are made using cutouts from a sheet of PVC. PE trees look more realistic. The plastic is poured into a mold of an actual real tree to create the needles and branches. Tips for Choosing the Right Tree to Fit Your Needs Choosing the right tree can be a challenge. Especially with all the different types and applications for them. So here are a few tips to help you make the best decision. What Are Your Goals for the Tree? Are you worried about your tree looking fake? Or do you not care at all that others notice? These questions can be important when deciding what tree to buy. If you would your tree to be as realistic as possible, it is recommended to get a green tree, preferably made out of PE plastic. This combo mixed with a pine-scented spray can make your tree almost indistinguishable from the real thing. If you could care less about the authentic look of a tree, you can really get creative with what you end up purchasing. It is really up to your preference of decorating when you go the clearly artificial route. Ease of Use Ease of use is just as important as the look of a tree. You never want to be spending hours of your time and energy putting together a simple tree– and that’s before decorating! Be sure to read reviews about the tree, good and bad. Look at the description of the packaging, does it have a handle? How easily does it assemble? Is the box durable for storage purposes? The whole point of getting the artificial tree is to make the process easier for yourself. You don’t want to replace one tedious task with another. How easy is the storage for the tree? Can you pop it back into the box? Remember, as much fun as it is, Christmas doesn’t last all year. The tree is going to be in some storage area most of the year. This brings us to the next tip… Get Quality Materials A key selling point with artificial trees is that they are reusable, but there is no point in buying a reusable tree if the quality isn’t there. Compared to an artificial tree that can last for years and years. The average price for an artificial tree is around $100 but can get up to $400, the payoff here is the saved headache of trekking through the snow every year to get a tree and the mess that come with it. For example, you can’t expect to spend less than $100 on a PE plastic, 6ft tree with built-in lighting. How to Save Money Raising Backyard Chickens
If you are like most new chicken owners, you fell in love with the idea of getting yourself a cute flock of backyard chickens and then quickly found out that you were spending way more money than you thought. First off, realize that these feelings are completely normal and it happens to all of us! However, unlike everyone else, by the time you are done reading this article you are going to learn the secrets to saving money while tending your flock. Skip the Frills Expensive Calcium Booster Supplements This is completely unnecessary if you give your chickens a balanced diet. Some chicken owners will try to argue that purchasing things like pricey ground oyster shells is necessary to have just in case their chickens begin to lay eggs that don’t have strong shells. The truth is that the key ingredient calcium carbonate, found in ground oyster shells, is already abundant in their quality standard feed. The first step toward helping your chickens strengthen their eggs is to feed them dairy-based simple kitchen scraps, like cheese and milk. Although, be sure not to go overboard because too much diary will give your chickens diarrhea. If that still doesn’t help increase the strength of their shells, just dry out and grind up their own egg shells to feed it back to them. While this may sound odd, it is completely natural. The best part is that the egg shells are 100% free! Save Money on Feed Feed Leftovers Chickens are omnivores, which means that they eat both vegetables and meat. This is great news for us because you can give your chickens a free meal while reducing the amount of food waste in your household. Just be sure to feed your backyard chickens a healthy selection of table scraps each time. Feel free to feed your backyard chickens things like: vegetables, meat, yogurt, sunflower seeds, oatmeal, rice, cereal, cheese, milk and whey. Stay away from feeding your backyard chickens things like: junk food, uncooked beans, avocado peels and potato peels. Free Range If you have both the space and the grass, let your little chickens scratch around a bit. They will be digging up nutritious little bits to eat like: grass, weeds, worms, and insects. The most important thing to remember is that the more that you let your backyard chickens free range, the less you will need to feed them the store bought food. Saving while Staying Warm Fix the Ventilation Placing a heater in an enclosed coop during the winter can not only be dangerous, but can also very expensive. While using a flashlight, check your coop for any holes or separations where the wood meets. If you find that the light is shining on the opposite end, your coop is suffering from a poor ventilation issue. This is the equivalent of leaving your bedroom window slightly open at night on a snowy night. Brrr, no thanks! Fill the gaps with caulk until you seal up any unnecessary spaces. As a test, try and use your flashlight again to see if any light comes pouring out of the other side. If not, your job is complete. Buying Extra Nesting Boxes 1 Chicken + 1 Box ≠ Zero Problems Let’s be honest, one of the main reasons that we have chickens is so that we can enjoy some of those delicious homegrown eggs. So we do everything possible to make sure that our chickens are happy and healthy. We even make sure that each chick has their own bunk. Photo credit: Myasoinfo Unfortunately, chickens can be fickle about their accommodations. To be honest, I didn’t know what I expected. Even if I put their names on the front of their nesting boxes, it’s not like each chicken would line up orderly to their assigned bunks. It doesn’t matter if you filled each corner of your coop with nesting boxes, your chickens are going sleep on the floor and fight over particular nesting boxes for no reason. Just know that this behavior is normal, irrational chicken behavior. Entertainment and Toys With urban farming and raising backyard chickens becoming quite popular these last few years, we have seen the emergence of some pretty wacky toys meant for your chickens. Now before you buy your chicken the latest iPad take a step back and just look at your chickens. They don’t need any fancy or high tech devices. Chickens that are allowed to free range are as happy as can be. Just look at all of the fun that your chickens are having when you aren’t there: If you want to make some toys at home for your chickens to entertain themselves, try your hand at some of these classics: 1) Take a single piece of rope and hang a head of cabbage just low enough off the ground so that your chickens need to jump to get at the cabbage. 2) Once the chickens eat all of the cabbage off of the rope just leave the rope there for a few days. You’ll notice that some of the chickens will jump and use the rope as a swing. 3) You truly haven’t felt pure joy until you surprise your chickens with a pile of garden weeds, raked leaves and some feed sprinkled throughout the pile. Though I have a feeling that you will be more entertained than the chickens. Raising backyard chickens does not need to be an expensive affair. With a little bit of planning and imagination, you will be able to make your chickens happier while saving some extra money at the same time.
