Hop into the Spirit with these 6 Fun Easter Crafts Ideas
As a child, I really loved Easter. What kid wouldn’t like a day full of Easter egg hunts, chocolate bunnies and egg decorating? However, now that I am an adult I think of Easter in a different way. I’m excited with the additional sunlight that comes with Daylight Savings which prompts me to get back outside and start working on my outdoor projects in preparation for Easter. Whether you are putting together a list of activities to get the kids outdoors or if you are completely at a loss for what to do this year, these 6 Easter crafts ideas will help you shake off the last little bit of winter and celebrate the beginning of the spring season. 1) Bake some Easter Themed Treats: This Easter themed craft idea is fun for both the parents and the kids. In middle school, I felt so proud to come into class with my tray of homemade cupcakes that I helped my mom bake. It made me feel great knowing that these were better than just store bought cupcakes. With a little bit of buttercream frosting, some shavings or either chocolate or bacon and some mini chocolate egg candy, you can make some beautiful Easter themed cupcakes. 2) Make an Easter Wreath: No, wreaths aren’t just for the Christmas season. This Easter craft idea takes a new spin on wreaths. With a quick trip to your local crafts store, you can create a wonderful home decoration to place on your door, window or kitchen table. 3) Get in the Garden: Take some time on a weekend afternoon to head over to your local plant nursery and pick up some Easter Lilies and Daffodils. Each of these flowers are quintessential to celebrating Easter as they each bloom in the spring and will add colorful new life to your yard. Get the kids involved and have them help you dedicate a space in the yard to place your new flowers. 4) Decorate a Birdhouse: Greet the birds that are coming back from their long migration with a nice little birdhouse in your backyard. This Easter crafts idea doesn’t need to be technical. So don’t worry about having to build your own birdhouse from scratch. After you’ve applied the paint, it’s important to let the paint dry for up to 24 hours in a dry place before your new feathered neighbors move in. 5) Get a Little Crafty: Making a functional pinwheel is a snap. Using the instructions below, you not only entertain the little ones with this fun project but you can place the finished pinwheels out in the yard next to your new flowers. As kids start growing up, they start needing different toys — ideally, toys that will help them hone and develop the necessary skills in life. For example, when children start walking, a rocking horse is a great toy to help them achieve elementary balance and learn how to coordinate with their arms and legs. And once they master the art of basic movement, they begin being drawn to toys that allow them a feeling of faster motion — like ride-on cars, scooters, and go-karts. After all, that’s why we love adult-sized vehicles as well; they’re simply fun. With that in mind, it’s no wonder your kid starts asking for a toy bike or car as soon as they realize such toys exist. They’ve got lights, noises, and some cool gadgets — even a kid who hasn’t seen a real car up to that point would be intrigued. Celebrating our National Parks this 4th of July Weekend
Summer is in full swing! Next Thursday is America’s Birthday, commonly known as Independence Day. The 4th of July is one of the biggest camping weekends of the year. Whether you’re hitting up the local campground for a family reunion, or trekking out into one of America’s National Parks for a few days away from civilization, we’ve got the gear you need to make it Aosom! This 4th of July, we want to take a moment to highlight some of the Americans who made our preserved wild places possible: Carleton Watkins, John Muir, and Theodore Roosevelt. Three men who, at the turn of the 20th century, set the stage for the National Parks and Forests that we are able to appreciate and enjoy today. Carleton Watkins Carleton Watkins was a 19th century landscape photographer who captured America’s imagination with his photographs of the American West. He used a revolutionary stereoscope camera to create unprecedented images of wild landscapes, focusing specifically on California’s Yosemite Valley. Watkins’ photographs brought the beauty of the West to the world. “In part because of Watkins’ Yosemite pictures, in 1864 Congress passed and President Lincoln signed legislation preserving Yosemite Valley. The law was an important first step in the creation of the National Park Service in 1916. In 1865, Mount Watkins in Yosemite was named after Carleton Watkins.”(1). Watkins’ early forays into environmental conservatism laid the foundation for environmentalism in American politics. John Muir “And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul.” John Muir was a naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, and lifelong advocate for the preservation of wild places in the American West. Known as the “Patron Saint of the American Wilderness,” Muir co-founded the conservation organization The Sierra Club in 1892. The Sierra Club worked to establish the National Forests and put protected lands under federal jurisdiction. A Scottish immigrant, Muir devoted his life to the preservation of western forests. Muir was a contemporary of Watkins, and the two spent time together in Yosemite. Muir studied Watkin’s iconic photographs of Yosemite Valley and its features, including El Capitan, while Watkins photographed Muir amongst the trees and valleys he fought to preserve. Theodore Roosevelt America’s 25th president, Teddy Roosevelt was a lifelong naturalist and environmental conservationist. In 1903, President Roosevelt met with John Muir in Yosemite. The two embarked on a backcountry camping trip through the Yosemite Valley, which had a profound impact upon both. About the experience, Roosevelt was quoted, saying “Lying out at night under those giant Sequoias was like lying in a temple built by no hand of man, a temple grander than any human architect could by any possibility build.”(2). Muir helped convince Roosevelt of the need for Federal regulation of designated wild places, and the importance of preservation over resource conservation. During his presidency from 1901-1909, Roosevelt used his Executive Order powers to establish National Parks, Forests, and Monuments to preserve natural resources, and provide protections for both land and wildlife. Yosemite Valley was the focal point for early conservation efforts. It’s rich valleys, sheer rock mountain faces, clear rivers, and towering sequoias inspired early naturalists and conservationists to action.
