backyard chicken run

What is a chicken run?
A run is an enclosed yard for your chickens to move around in during the day. If you allow your hens to "free range", you might not want a run at all. Chicken runs can secure from predators eliminating the daily chore of letting them out of the coop in the morning and and locking them back in each night.
A run can be as simple as enclosing the area underneath your raised coop with mesh, or much larger and more elaborate. The construction is similar to that for a shed or a house. For the walls there's a bottom piece and a top piece and vertical joists in between. The walls of a shed or house need to support heavy plywood and a roof so the joists are often spaced 16 or 18 inches apart. The chicken run walls are wire so the joists can be spaced much wider apart.
